Yotopia boasts fresh, Iowa-made ingredients

NORTH LIBERTY– Just call Veronica Tessler the yogurt queen.
She was the first to bring frozen yogurt to the Iowa City area in 2011;the first to use 100 percent yogurt with live and active cultures; and the first to source her ingredients locally.
Now the queen is expanding her empire to North Liberty.
Yotopia in North Liberty opened its doors along with Molly’s Cupcakes this past March. Tessler had been contemplating moving to a smaller town for months, and with the ever-expanding market in North Liberty, she knew she had found her business’s new home.

Molly’s Cupcakes opens its second Iowa bakery in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– Serendipitous.
It’s a word Molly’s Cupcake’s owner Jamie Smith uses quite a bit when she talks about her journey with the bakery.
When the Manchester native first left her career in real estate, Smith applied for jobs at five different bakeries in Chicago. Molly’s was the only one who returned her phone calls. It was simply meant to be.
“It worked out great. They’re the best,” she said. “I absolutely love them.”

Just breathe

Yoga for everyone has arrived in North Liberty

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader

NORTH LIBERTY– Intention. Gratitude. Joy.
Any of these words could become one’s own mantra, a personal meditation cue meant to focus the mind, relax the body and connect with one’s inner spirit.
For Samantha Myers, RYT, they are elements of her life’s next new journey.
The North Liberty resident just opened the doors of Samantra Yoga Studio at 620 Pacha Parkway (next to Debut Dance), with classes beginning Friday, Aug. 1.

A new place with old friends

Former owner, manager of El Sol opening new Mexican restaurant

Solon Economist
SOLON– Familiar faces will greet patrons at the door, and familiar selections will be on the menu, but there will also be some new surprises at the Frida Kahlo Mexican Restaurant and Lucy’s Bakery that will open in Solon at the beginning of August.
Diego Rivera, former owner of El Sol Mexican Cuisine in Solon and Mount Vernon, has partnered with former El Sol manager Joel Vazquez to bring the community a new restaurant at 101 Windflower Ln., (in the Dock’s old location).

New Japanese restaurant to open soon in North Liberty

Fresh, friendly, informative

NORTH LIBERTY– Li Chiou and Vincent Chia don’t just want people to like Japanese food.
They want people to understand it.
That’s why their new North Liberty restaurant, Sushiya, includes a special bar where customers can sit less than two feet away from the head chef Vincent as he prepares fresh sushi and other dishes especially for them.

The Motor Doctor is in (Shueyville)

Auto repair with a conscience

SHUEYVILLE– Hippocrates is said to have coined the phrase, “Primum non nocerum (First do no harm),” as part of his famous and time-honored oath for physicians. Although he’s not a medical doctor, Marck Dudrey, aka: the Motor Doctor, takes that philosophy to heart when it comes to his customers’ wallets.
“I like to think of myself as auto repair with a conscience,” Dudrey said. “I’m not going to sell you something on your car that I don’t feel you need.”

Coralville Truck service moving to Solon

By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist
SOLON– A 30-year-old Coralville truck repair center will be relocating to Solon later this summer.
At a July 2 meeting, the members of the Solon City Council approved the site plan for an addition to the former TePoel Trucking building at 507 N. Market St.
The building will serve as the new home for The Truck Shop, a business which has been located in Coralville for 29 years.
Owner Joe Schrock of Tiffin has purchased the TePoel property and expects to relocate his business to the new site by the end of August.

Learn the basics of photography in a flash

NL’s Christie offers group classes and private lessons

NORTH LIBERTY– To Charles Christie, owner of Tyme Photography, there is no wrong way to take a photograph. Instead, it’s about applying better techniques to the process. It is this philosophy that he is passing down to his students.
“The class is designed in a progression of steps,” explained Christie. “When you buy a book on photography, you really don’t know what you’re getting. It will cover one subject when you should be reading about that subject much later on, so you’re kind of skipping around.”

Refreshing a long-time North Liberty favorite

NL Subway has new owners

NORTH LIBERTY– A long-established restaurant in North Liberty has new owners, a new location, and a brand new look.
But fans of Subway will be happy to know it still offers the same fresh, good-tasting food.

The Retreat: seriously good coffee in a relaxed atmosphere

A break from the hassles of life

ELY– “We take our coffee very seriously.
Mark Banowetz, co-owner of The Retreat in Ely, and his wife Kathleen opened the coffee shop and bakery in a renovated house along State Street in January 2013. In just one year, it has become a daily destination for many, and a new discovery for many more.
“We already had the house and Mark was using it for his own business (Great American Shed Co.),” Kathleen said. “We always kind of wanted to do a coffee shop so we started thinking about it and doing research, and one day, we decided we could do it here in this house with a little extra work.’”

Fun in any season

Friendly foursome overcomes challenges, brings fun back to Bobbers Grill, Scales Pointe

NORTH LIBERTY– It was an opportunity that hit suddenly, led to a leap of faith, a flurry of activity, and culminated in four friends becoming business partners.
But that’s only the beginning.
When Rick and Marcia Frauenholtz, and Jeff and Mary Dostal purchased Bobbers Grill, and the Scales Pointe Campground, nobody could have foreseen the challenges and rewards to come. As long time campers, they were familiar with the place and many of its patrons. They had watched dishearteningly as its popularity declined.

Coming soon to a home theater near you

NORTH LIBERTY– If you think the days of the video rental story are history, prepare to be schooled again.
Family Video will open a new location in North Liberty this spring, and the privately-owned chain of video stores has transitioned well from its origins in 1946 to the 21st century.
Yes, 1946; the four is not a typo.
