City assessing derecho-damaged trees in right of ways

NORTH LIBERTY– Starting Monday, Aug. 31, city staff began surveying mature trees in the right-of-ways in North Liberty’s the original section of town, and marking trees that require branches trimmed or to be completely removed. The staff will identify any hazards so that a tree contractor can be hired to do this work. Staff will attempt to make contact with the property owner.
Trees will be market with temporary paint. Trees identified for branch trimming will be marked with a circle. Trees identified for complete removal will be marked with a cross.

Backup generators do their job for city

NORTH LIBERTY– Council member Raquisha Harrington summed it up during an Aug. 11 meeting.
“2020 has not been nice to anyone at all,” she observed.
Harrington was echoing comments from other North Liberty City Council members who voiced support for city employees after an inland hurricane known as a derecho tore a path across the state and into Illinois Monday, Aug. 11, leaving hundreds of thousands without power for days.
Power was restored to most North Liberty residents by Tuesday afternoon, allowing council members to continue with a regularly scheduled virtual meeting.

Haman Makes CCA FFA History

IOWA CITY– With the Iowa State Fair postponed until the 2021 fair season, organizers put on the Iowa State Fair Special Edition– a livestock show for Iowa’s youth. The livestock show was for 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members only, with livestock nominated by May 15, to be shown at the Iowa State Fair.

TIFFIN– Each year, Southeast district and Iowa Future Farmers of America (FFA) officers plan and facilitate Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) Conferences for FFA members in the Southeast district. Clear Creek Amana welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Southeast district on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

NORTH LIBERTY– The death, in police custody, of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn., earlier this summer sparked protests, riots and a new awareness of racial inequalities.
Following demonstrations in Iowa City, Coralville and Solon, the City of North Liberty embarked on a proactive approach to address issues related to its minority communities.
According to data from 2015, whites make up 88.2 percent (16,134) of the residents of North Liberty with blacks comprising 4.7 percent (867), and Hispanics totaling 4.4 percent (806).

IOWA CITY– They’ve asked nicely. They’ve pleaded, appealing to your concern for your fellow man. Now, they’ve made it a regulation.
The Johnson County Supervisors unanimously approved a face covering regulation during their regular meeting Thursday, Aug. 6.

Board receives an update on district’s Return to Learn plan

OXFORD– While some school districts, such as the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) have pushed back the first day of the 2020-21 school year, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District is still planning on returning students to their buildings on Monday, Aug. 24.
CCA Superintendent Tim Kuehl and Associate Superintendent Matt Leeman updated the school board of education on the district’s Return to Learn plan during a regularly scheduled work session on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the district administrative offices near Oxford.

Good Neighbor Meeting Aug. 18 for property located at the SW corner of Kansas Avenue and Oak Terrace Avenue

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty may soon consider a zoning map amendment (rezoning) for the property located at the southwest corner of Kansas Avenue and Oak Terrace Avenue. The developer has indicated that the proposed zoning would be RS-4 PAD Single-Unit Residence District Planned Area Development and the development would be 27 detached single-family homes on one lot.
The purpose of the Good Neighbor Meeting is to allow the applicant(s) to describe the proposed development, answer any questions and hear any concerns about the proposed development.

Ireland railroad crossing to be replaced starting Aug. 17

TIFFIN– At least 100 feet away from the railroad tracks crossing Ireland Avenue in Tiffin is a round advanced warning sign: the familiar yellow circle with a large black “X” and “R R” markings on it. Below that is another warning sign, one which will no longer be required soon, that states “Rough Crossing.”

What to do with tree limbs and bulky debris

NORTH LIBERTY– Monday’s storm created a tremendous amount of debris and cleanup will be a lengthy process. City crews will begin picking up tree limbs from curbs Aug. 11, and a debris site has been established for residents who are able to haul their own limbs down.
Tree limbs can be piled between the street and sidewalk. Please place them parallel to the curb in sections of 10 feet or less and take care not to push trees and limbs into the street. City crews will start picking up as early as possible.

CCA board approves full return for PK-8, and 50/50 for high school

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Education approved a Return to Learn (RTL) plan in a special meeting Wednesday, July 29, at the high school in Tiffin.
The plan, “Plan 2” of four options considered, calls for a full return of pre-kindergarten (PK) through eighth-grade students, and a 50/50 return for the high school with students broken into morning and afternoon sessions.

North Liberty adopts face covering initiative to combat COVID-19

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s city council has unanimously adopted a public health initiative advising those in North Liberty to keep social distance, to wear face shields or cloth masks in public settings and businesses to adopt must-wear policies.
“Reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, is critical to our schools’ re-openings, our businesses’ recoveries and our community’s health,” noted a city press release. “Face coverings keep transmission low, prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed and protect our community members who are vulnerable.”
