Ely bank robber captured by authorities

Solon State Bank in Ely robbed Friday morning

ELY– The suspect in the Friday morning robbery of the Solon State Bank in Ely has been taken into custody, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Department.
Robert David Dennis Melton, 50, of Cedar Rapids, has been charged with robbery in the second degree and remains in the Linn County Jail pending his court appearance, according to Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner.
Linn County deputies and a Linn County Conservation officer located the suspect and his vehicle at the intersection of Ivanhoe Road and Jappa Road, where the suspect was taken into custody.

Early voting for Feb. 4 elections begins this week

IOWA CITY– Early voting for both the Feb. 4 Clear Creek Amana bond election and the Swisher mayoral election will begin Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7:45 a.m.
Voting will be available at the auditor’s office at 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, during business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weekdays through Monday, Feb. 3, the day before the election. The office will be closed on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 20. 
Satellite voting will be available at Clear Creek Amana High School on Friday, Jan. 31, before and during the basketball game, from 5 to 8 p.m.

West High to host mini-dance marathon Jan. 19

IOWA CITY– The second annual West High Mini-Dance Marathon (WHSDM) will take place on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 1-6 p.m. in the Iowa City West High School Cafeteria. In 2013, the inaugural WHSDM raised over $21,000 that went towards the final total at the University of Iowa Dance Marathon’s Big Event, which raises money for the UI Children’s Hospital and children battling pediatric cancer.
