Community

North Liberty earns national “playful city” designation

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty has been honored with a 2016 Playful City USA designation for the fifth time, and was one of only three cities named in Iowa. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the national recognition program honors cities and towns across the country for making their cities more playable. North Liberty invests in playgrounds, parks, green spaces and trails to make the community more playable. The city continues to support local youth sports, and is adding a splash pad in Penn Meadows Park.

Completed, but not yet finished

CCA Middle School addition work on-hold until students leave

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– The addition to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School in Tiffin continues to frustrate the administration and school board, despite being put into service and occupied earlier this year.
The $14.8 million, 60,000-square-foot, two-story addition was part of a $48 million bond issue voters approved in 2014 to alleviate over-crowding while providing additional space for future enrollment growth in the district. The project was to have been completed ahead of the start of the current school year but was soon besieged by delays.

Following the ceremony at Ridgewood, the Legion representatives will travel to Club 76, at 3949 Mehaffey Bridge Road, for another flag ceremony.
At 1:30 p.m., East Overlook at Coralville Lake, and at 6 p.m. at the Sutliff Bridge.

Liberty Pond sailing Sundays at 1:30 p.m.

NORTH LIBERTY– Sunday, May 22, marked the opening of the new radio-controlled sailboat racing season at Liberty Pond. The one-design boats raced are mostly in the CR-914 class. They feature a 3-foot-long hull and stand 5 feet tall from the keel to the mast tip.
Several other racing dates are planned for 1:30 p.m. at Liberty Pond and are as follows: June 12 and 26; July 10, 24 and 31; Aug. 14 and 28; Sept. 11 and 25; and every Sunday in October. On the off Sundays, racers can be found at Sherman Pond in Hiawatha.

Clipper Marching Band heads to D.C. for Memorial Day

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana High School Marching Band will travel to Washington, D.C., this week. City-wide garage sales June 9-12

NORTH LIBERTY– Local organizers have selected the weekend of June 10 for city-wide garage sales in North Liberty and have set up a website with information for sellers and buyers: northlibertygaragesales.com.
In addition to the website, garage-sale-goers will be able to pull up a mobile-friendly Google Map and find nearby sales by item categories.
“I always thought it was one of those things dying for an upgrade,” said organizer Lydia Fine. “I just wanted to make it easier for people to find what they need.”

Dubuque Street Trail closure

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, a segment of the Dubuque Street Trail just west of North Liberty Road will close on Wednesday, May 25. The closure is necessary so crews can perform storm sewer work and then replace the trail segment. The trail is expected to reopen on Friday, May 26, ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

Saving Sugar Bottom’s hardwood trees

Bur Oak Land Trust launches campaign to purchase more Big Grove timber

SOLON– Imagine you’re in the heart of Iowa City on a busy day– cars, people and concrete.
Now think about being 7 miles away, standing in the middle of the Bur Oak Land Trust’s Big Grove Preserve, a centuries-old forest populated with tall hardwoods– calm and quiet, broken only by the occasional songbird.

Hidden habitat

Over 400 attend Macbride Raptor Project family day

SOLON– You may not know it exists, unless you’ve been there.
From a bird’s eye view, the Macbride Raptor Project, nestled into the Macbride Nature and Recreation Area, seems to be situated on the tip of a gravel wing; down below it is home to more than 20 birds of prey– three of which have been featured in the project’s new family day. The third event was held Saturday, May 7, and featured the American kestrel, North America’s littlest falcon.

Setting the table for outdoor dining

Council gets first look at proposed Main Street policy

SOLON– The vision for outdoor dining on Solon’s Main Street came into a little sharper focus at a May 4 city council meeting, but it’s still a little blurry around the edges.
In March, Red Vespa Pizzeria and Wine Bar owners Aziz and Angie Longou asked the city to consider allowing seasonal outdoor service by leasing a Main Street parking spot in front of their business.
In April, council members agreed and directed city staff to develop guidelines to allow sidewalk and street seating for Main Street eateries.

Solon Poppy Days May 21-May 30

SOLON– Memorial poppies, made by hospitalized and disabled veterans, will be available in various businesses in Solon from May 21 through Memorial Day.
The red poppy has been the symbol for honoring and remembering the men and women who served and died in services to our country since 1921.
The poppy was immortalized by Canadian Colonel John McCrae in his poem “In Flanders Fields” after WWI and also is used in Canada, Great Britain and other countries to honor the war dead.

Solon students rock Assessments

This year’s scores were the best in Solon school history

By Nora Heaton
Solon Economist
SOLON– Matt Townsley can describe Solon schools’ Iowa Assessment scores in three words: “We rocked it.”
Townsley, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) director of instruction and technology, said Solon students’ performance this year was the best in the district’s history.
The district’s goal states that 90 percent of students will be proficient and 25 percent of students will be highly proficient in tested areas.
