Road tripping through county projects

Supervisors, staff view progress of current road, bridge improvements

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County supervisors and county staff hit the road on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
The purpose of the trip was to tour road sites, receive updates on projects and view road conditions in various spots throughout the county, an effort undertaken annually, said County Engineer Greg Parker, who supervises the Johnson County Secondary Roads Department.

Five county residents to attend Juvenile Justice Reform program

NORTH LIBERTY– The subject of minorities being arrested and incarcerated at a higher percentage than white people has been an on-going discussion topic in Johnson County, and was cited during debates over the county’s proposed new justice center. However that discussion focused on adult contact with law enforcement and the criminal justice center, and not necessarily on juvenile offenders.

Solon schools lunchrooms to serve local farm food

SOLON– Corn means something more to us here in Iowa, and nothing shows it off better than events like the corn-shucking party at Solon High School Aug. 25.
The party, which ended when the work was done, was expected to take place from 2 until 5 p.m. Surprisingly, though, it finished an hour and a half after the fun started. The corn was served to students during the first week of school during lunch.
“It was great to see everybody working together,” Laurie Broghammer said as she cleaned up the last bits of corn from the cafeteria kitchen.

City council asked by youth to consider urban chicken ordinance

SOLON– Other towns are doing it.
Why not Solon?
Ethan Kober, accompanied by his father Scott, posed the question to the Solon City Council at an Aug. 21 meeting.
“I’ve raised chickens the last four years, and I’d like to continue to do that in Solon,” Kober told council members. He asked what could possibly be done to allow backyard chickens within the Solon city limits.
