By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– A Johnson County Board of Supervisors work session on Monday, Oct. 14, was meant to determine the next steps toward finding a courthouse and jail proposal voters would approve.
Instead of consensus there was conflict, and after more than three hours of discussion, the five members decided to step back and try again at a later date.

OXFORD– Steve Berner didn’t quite get what he wanted for the city of Tiffin, but it was a step forward.
The Tiffin mayor addressed the board of directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district during the board’s regular monthly meeting Wed., Oct. 16, in Oxford. The City of Tiffin is hoping the district will deed some land on the western edge of the CCA campus to the city for an intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and a road into the Deerview development.

“Southeast [elementary] is bursting at the seams,” board member Jeff McGinnis said.

Mayor says no to Tiffin P&Z appointment

By Lori Lindner

TIFFIN– In a rare display of executive authority, Tiffin Mayor Steve Berner has decided to veto a recent council decision. The action prompted criticism during public comment at last week’s council meeting.
The Tiffin City Council voted 3-1 on Sept. 25 to appoint resident Matthew Klein to the city’s planning and zoning (P&Z) commission, after discussion on two of the three applicants and some back-and-forth jockeying of motions to appoint them.
