Trojans upset Hempstead on Senior Night

Iowa City West wins, 3-1

IOWA CITY– West High coach Brad Stiles told the crowd assembled for Senior Night recognition Friday, May 22, it had been a season full of ups and downs. Beating the top-ranked team in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Mississippi Division 3-1 was certainly an “up.”
The Trojans, number two-ranked in the Valley Division, pulled off the Senior Night upset after a shaky start.
The Mustangs scored eight minutes into the game and held the Trojans scoreless for the remainder of the first half.

Three seniors to lead CCA’s diamond girls

OXFORD– Not many coaches in their first season with a program are able to take their team to the state championships. But Barb Lynn did when she took over the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball program last year.
It was the team’s first state appearance since 2012. The Clippers fell in the first round to rival Solon and eventually came home from Fort Dodge with the eighth-place trophy a 22-20 record overall and 10-6 in the WaMaC West Division, good for third place.

Clipper girls soccer 14-1 ahead of season finale

MOUNT VERNON– The wins keep coming for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) soccer girls, with Waterloo Columbus and Mount Vernon the latest to fall. The pair of wins boosted the Clippers to 14-1 ahead of the season finale at West Delaware on Wednesday, May 27.
Columbus visited the Clippers on Senior Night, Monday, May 18, and were sunk, 4-1.
CCA coach Matt Harding said the win completed what they are calling the “classic” WaMaC West Championship since the Sailors were in the division until two years ago. Harding noted Columbus had taken the division championship pretty consistently.

DES MOINES– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Iowa City West were represented at the 2015 State Co-Ed Track and Field Meet held Thursday, May 21, through Saturday, May 23, at Drake University in Des Moines.
The CCA girls shuttle hurdle relay won the Class 3A title as Mia Smith, Corrine Schwarting, Megan Lukas and Natalie Brimeyer finished in 1:03.89 besting their second-place finish of 1:05.44 in the preliminary heats. Brimeyer was eighth in the finals of the 3A 100-meter hurdles (16.18 seconds) while Schwarting took sixth in the 3A long jump (16-04.00)

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) announced its selections for the 2015 All-Division Track and Field First, Second, Honorable Mention and All Academic teams on Monday, May 18.
In the Valley Division, Linn-Mar’s Nathan Hopp was the girls’ Coach of the Year while Lucy Schneeckloth of Cedar Rapids Jefferson was the Athlete of the Year. Cedar Falls’ Dirk Homewood was the boys’ Coach of the Year with Cedar Falls’ Sam Schillinger and Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Dalles Jacobus sharing Athlete of the Year.

Hawkeye women’s basketball wrap part 2

This is the second part of a two-part look at the great season the Hawkeye women’s basketball team had this year.
Iowa finished 26-8, 14-4 in the Big Ten, which was good enough for second place.
The Hawks went to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1996 and the senior class is the winningest class since 1991 with 93 victories.
Iowa averaged 79.5 points per game, which is a program record for scoring offense for the second straight year.
Samantha Logic, Bethany Doolittle and Melissa Dixon were the highest-scoring trio in Big Ten history with 4,379 points.

Spartans second; 13 events qualify for state track meet

MT. PLEASANT– The Solon boy’s track team made the most of the opportunities given to them at last week’s district meet held in Mount Pleasant.
While the team finished runner-up to host Mount Pleasant, the Spartans qualified an impressive 13 events for this week’s state meet to be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Under the format used to determine state qualifiers, the top two finishers in each event move on. The final eight spots in each event are determined by ranking performances from across the state at the various district meets.

Four wins in a row heading to postseason

SOLON– Solon’s varsity soccer team won four matches in a row and jumped to a winning record just in time to peak in the postseason.
The Spartan boys defeated Washington 2-1 on the road Monday (May 18) and had a regular-season finale scheduled for Tuesday (May 19) at Center Point-Urbana.

Lady Spartans wallop West Delaware, 11-1

SOLON– Despite injuries and scheduling issues, Solon’s varsity girls soccer team is holding its own as it heads into the backstretch of the season.
The Lady Spartans moved to 8-4 on the season with a 5-1 win over Western Dubuque Monday at home. Solon also picked up wins against West Delaware and Independence, but fell to 3A opponent Cedar Rapids Prairie.

TIFFIN– It was a very good week for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls on the soccer field. The Clippers went 3-0, earned their first ever divisional conference title and posted some individual scoring milestones.

TIFFIN– The Trojans of South Tama started Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) week off on a sour note Monday, May 11, with a 4-2 varsity soccer win over the Clippers in Tiffin.
South Tama scored three times in the first half, creating a tough situation for the Clippers. CCA finally went up on the scoreboard with 27:16 left in the second half after the Trojans’ keeper fumbled the ball inside the net for an own goal.
