BACK TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Solon girls face Harlan in Friday 4A final

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s back to the championship game for the Solon Lady Spartans.
Solon swept Davenport Assumption in a 4A state volleyball semifinal in Cedar Rapids Thursday afternoon and will face Harlan in the championship game at noon Friday, Nov. 15, at the US Cellular Center.
Ten kills each from Jordans Runge and Smith paced Solon. After falling behind in set two, Jordan Smith hit a clutch kill and then later delivered an ace and near-ace to spark a rally.

The Hawkeyes exercised some demons Saturday in their 38-14 win at Purdue.
First of all, they became bowl-eligible with their sixth victory. It seems like they haven’t gone bowling in years even though it was just last year that they missed a bowl game.
Second, the rushing attack, which has been shut down the last couple of weeks, exploded for 318 yards (a season high and the most rushing yards since Iowa had 365 in 2002 against Minnesota).

Early injuries for Hawkeye hoops

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams opened last weekend and both had major injuries.
Let’s start with the women, who won their first two games.
Nicole Smith only got to play three minutes in the exhibition opener before she hurt her knee. She will miss 10-14 weeks after having surgery last Friday.
Coach Lisa Bluder said Nicole worked hard in the off season, was in great shape and ready to help the Hawkeyes inside as she is the tallest player on the team at 6-4.
That leaves nine scholarship players.

Solon knocks off No. 2 Decorah on the road

DECORAH– This year, they would not be turned away.
The Solon Spartans upended the No. 2 team in Class 3A Friday night on the road, earning a spot in the state semifinals at the UNI-Dome this Thursday against Washington.
A year ago, the road ended in Decorah with a 35-10 loss.
This year, Solon took the lead and nursed a two-score margin into the fourth quarter, fending off a late rally to defeat the Decorah Vikings, 28-20.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Solon Spartans will make their third consecutive state tournament appearance after defeating the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers in three games during a Class 4A regional final at Cedar Rapids Washington High School Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Spartans won 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17 to earn the green state qualifier banner and head for a Tuesday, Nov. 12, battle with Indianola in the quarterfinal round at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Spartans run away from West Delaware

SOLON– It was a perfect storm for Solon.
The Spartans dismantled one of the top offenses in Class 3A last Monday with a 49-20 win over West Delaware.
The victory put Solon into the Class 3A quarterfinals against No. 2 Decorah Friday night, and the Spartans earned a date at the UNI-Dome with a 28-20 win over the Vikings.
But as great as it was to beat the defending state champs, the team that knocked you out of the playoffs last year, the second round match against West Delaware was almost picture perfect, with Solon’s offense, defense and special teams firing on all cylinders.
