West High ready for battle on the mat

Experience solidifies West High wrestling for upcoming season

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The 2013-14 season was stellar in many ways for the Iowa City West High Trojan wrestlers, with five state meet qualifiers, a 23-7 dual meet record and a 12-1 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) record. In addition, the Trojans were fifth in the state dual meet and placed seventh overall in the State Individual Wrestling Meet.

Six letter winners to lead Trojans, Women of Troy in bowling

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High bowling program will be led by six returning letter winners as they take to the lanes for the 2014-15 season. Mike Mellecker coaches both teams and with eight years under his belt has amassed a 29-68 record with the boys, and a 44-66 showing with the girls.

What a difference a week makes

Hawk Talk

The bipolar Hawkeye football team took the north route in Saturday’s 30-14 win at Illinois.
To say the win was the biggest of the season would be close, but the 48-7 win over Northwestern was even better since the Wildcats upset Notre Dame 43-40 in overtime at South Bend at the same time Iowa was beating Illinois.
Iowa will be underdogs in its final two home games with Wisconsin and Nebraska.
In the last five games, Iowa has beaten Indiana 45-29, lost to Maryland 38-31, beat Northwestern 48-7, got crushed by Minnesota 51-14 and then beat Illinois 30-14.

Record win for Hawk women

The Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team started in 1974, which was also my first year of being a student at Iowa.
I don’t remember going to many games and the Hawkeyes didn’t have a winning season until 1978-79, when they finished 18-11.
Vivian Stringer came on the scene in 1983 and she helped turn Iowa into a national power.
When Lisa Bluder came on board in 2000 she promised an up-tempo game and balanced scoring.
The Hawk women opened up the weekend with the best scoring output ever in the history of Iowa women’s basketball with a 107-56 romp over USC Upstate.

Hawkeye men open strong

The Iowa men, playing in the second game Friday at Carver, picked up a 90-56 win over Hampton, had five players in double-figures and won the rebound battle, 48-32.
I said before he season that Jarrod Uthoff, Peter Jok and Trey Dickerson would be the three wild cards that could help Iowa get to the next level.
Jarrod started, only played 19 minutes, hit 4-5 from 3-point range and scored 13 points.
Peter came off the bench, played 17 minutes and scored 11 points.
Coach Fran McCaffery said Peter has improved his defense a lot and could start at some point.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

Interested in playing indoor soccer?

SOLON– The parks and recreation director at Lisbon is looking to see if there is enough interest in the area to start an adult (16+) Futsal indoor soccer league.
You can go to the following website to find out more information: http://www.futsal.com. But in short, it is basically Indoor Soccer played five-on-five and uses a low-bounce Futsal ball. It uses a basketball court to play on, or similar indoor area.
If you are interested in playing, go to the Solon Parks and Recreation Facebook page and click on “Like” for this posting.

Third time the charm for the Lady Spartans

3A CHAMPIONS

CEDAR RAPIDS– They believed in themselves, and it worked.
The Solon volleyball team saved its best for last, whipping through the Class 3A state tournament without losing a set and claiming the title Friday, Nov. 14, against Mount Vernon at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
Solon enjoyed a 48-29 kill advantage over the Mustangs, led by senior Jordan Runge with 18 kills, a 66 percent kill efficiency and four blocks. Senior Jordan Smith added 13 kills and 12 digs.

Nearad, Smith help power Solon semifinal win

CEDAR RAPIDS– Taylor Nearad doesn’t have a name for her serve. Maybe she should think of one.
“My dad calls it the curvy serve,” Nearad said.
Nearad’s sizzling, spinning serves helped Solon’s volleyball team wrest control of a Class 3A semifinal from third-ranked Nevada Thursday, Nov. 13, propelling the Lady Spartans into a championship game for the third straight year.
Nearad’s nine aces and fellow senior Jordan Smith’s 18 kills fueled a Solon attack that ended up sweeping the Cubs 25-20, 25-13, 25-21

Harlan sends CCA home with 3-0 semifinal sweep Nov. 13

Clippers’ historic cruise at state ends early

CEDAR RAPIDS– While the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers only made it to the semifinals of the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament, that’s farther than any CCA team has been since 1999.
The Harlan Cyclones blew through the U.S. Cellular Center Thursday, Nov. 13, and swept the Clippers 3-0 to end CCA’s bid for a state championship. The defending 4A Champion Cyclones had little trouble winning 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to end the CCA season at 27-10. Harlan was led by 2013 Class 4A Player of the Year Jess Schaben with 18 kills.

Nightmare on Elm (Gopher) Street

Hawk Talk

One of the many things I have wondered about in sports is how does a team, that’s made of the same players, look so good one week and then look like somebody else the next?
That’s what happened Saturday at Gopherland as the Hawkeyes got smoked by Minnesota, 51-14.
The week before, the headlines in the Gazette read “A NEAR PERFECT EFFORT” in Iowa’s 48-7 win over Indiana.
This week the headline read “A whipping up north.”
After the Indiana win, there were hardly any negative messages on almost all of the Hawkeye message boards.
