Clippers wreak havoc upon Chiefs

CCA 52, Keokuk 7, for a happy homecoming

TIFFIN– There have been a lot of reasons to smile so far this varsity football season at Clear Creek Amana. Decimating the Keokuk Chiefs 52-7 Friday, Sept. 26, for the Homecoming game is one of them.
“That was a good one,” coach Matt Hughes said after the game. “It was just another team effort, these guys are just catching fire at the right time and each week they’re getting better and better just doing our base offense. We’re not doing anything crazy, just our base offense and just trying to get a little more aggressive week in and week out.”
It worked.

Marion wins 3-0 over CCA volleyball team

Marion Indians capsize Clipper girls

TIFFIN– The Marion Indians came into a WaMaC volleyball match-up Tuesday, Sept. 23, with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers ranked third in Class 4A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association. The Clippers held the number six spot, and despite a valiant effort, fell to Marion 3-0 in varsity action.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Women of Troy improved their record to 10-6 with a 3-1 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy in volleyball Tuesday, Sept. 23, on the Cougars’ court. West bounced back from a 25-19 first-game loss to take the next two 25-12 and 25-15 before pulling out a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Women of Troy swam to a third-place finish in team points Saturday, Sept. 27, at the 2014 Cougar Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Pleasant Valley won the meet with 714 team points while the Cougars were second with 551.5 and West ended the day with 398.5. Rival City High was fifth with 156 points.

Hello C.J.

Hawk Talk

Some of my homeboys from the Lodge have been telling me C.J. Beathard should be the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes.
I like C.J., but when your starting quarterback, Jake Rudock, is completing 67 percent of his passes, has five touchdown passes and two interceptions it’s hard to pull the switch.
Jake injured his leg before halftime of Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh with Iowa trailing 17-7.
C.J. played the whole second half and Iowa came back for a wonderful 24-20 win over Pittsburgh.
What if C.J. doesn’t get hurt? Does he still go in?

Still No. 1

Lady Spartans sweep Maquoketa at home

SOLON– The Lady Spartans had yet to shut out an opponent at home.
Strike that off the list.
Solon took care of business against conference foe Maquoketa 3-0 last Tuesday, Sept. 16, moving to 12-3 on the year and atop (with several others) the WaMaC East Division.
The Lady Spartans dispatched the Cardinals easily in the first two sets by identical scores of 25-16, then fended off the dreaded swing in momentum and put away the match in the third set, 25-20.
Jordan Smith and Jordan Runge combined for 19 of Solon’s 34 kills and seven of the team’s eight service aces (Smith had five).

Defense smothers Indians in 21-7 win

Solon holds Marion out of end zone for three quarters

SOLON– Following a shutout loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier, the Solon Spartan football team was looking for improvement.
Friday’s 21-7 home win against the Marion Indians was a step in the right direction.
“We had a better week of practice,” summarized head coach Kevin Miller.
Solon also had the services of starting running back Brandon Kramer, who missed the Xavier game due to injury.
Kramer and quarterback Brandan Childs logged over 150 rushing yards for the Spartans offensively, helping to fuel three scoring drives.

Runners look to step on the gas and close the gap

Girls second, boys eighth at Solon Invitational

SOLON– The gap is narrowing, but there’s still work to do as Solon’s girls head into the middle of their cross country season.
Solon came within two points of the team title Tuesday at their nine-team home invitational, but settled for runner-up to WaMaC rival Williamsburg.
A week before, Solon ran third in the Benton meet, 27 points behind the Raiders. “The girls ran their best race of the year as a team,” assessed coach Emy Williams. “They did move the pack up from (Benton) compared to these same teams. They got out strong and kept it during the whole race.”

IOWA CITY– They got it back.
Last year, cross-town rival City High won the traveling trophy known as “The Boot” with a 14-7 win at City. The loss was the first of only two in what became a 9-2 season for the Trojans.
This year, the West High crew already had two losses (27-6 against West Des Moines Valley and 28-0 to Cedar Rapids Washington) in the books ahead of facing the Little Hawks in a bid for bragging rights and the coveted Boot. On the other side of the ball was a Little Hawk crew looking for its first win of the 2014 season.

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy overhauled the Rams from Dubuque Senior with a 3-0 win Tuesday, Sept. 16, at home while doing a little fine-tuning of their own.
Coach Randy Dolson rolled out a new line-up with some new faces to the varsity squad, new roles for some of the veterans, and an 8-6 record. The Rams entered the contest with a 3-8 record and put up a bit of a challenge. West had a 6-0 lead early in the game with back-to-back kills from senior Laynie Whitehead. Whitehead went on to lead the Women of Troy with nine kills on the night.
