More competitive, with room for improvement

IOWA CITY– Kathy Bresnahan always tells it just like it is. With 22 years at Iowa City West and a 558-174 record with the Women of Troy’s volleyball program, she can afford to.
Bresnahan and her squad overcame the death of friend and teammate Caroline Found in 2011 to go on to a 39-6 record and the team’s second consecutive Class 4A state championship. West was a force to be reckoned with. In contrast, the 2012 season ended with a 20-17 record and the chance at a three-peat thwarted by a 3-2 loss to rival City High in the regional final.

Six Lady Spartans named to All-State and All-District softball teams

SOLON– Six Lady Spartans have been named to the 2013 Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-State & All-District softball teams.
Junior Mallory Madsen, senior Kara Misel and sophomore Taylor Nearad were named to the Class 4A first team. Madsen finished the season with a .512 batting average with 88 hits and 22 doubles. She struck out only three times, according to information listed with quikstatsiowa.com. Misel hit .436 with 68 hits (including 26 doubles) and 54 RBI. Nearad boasted a .491 average, with 80 hits. She had 27 doubles, four triples and two home runs.

Six from Solon varsity baseball named to WaMaC East All-Conference team

SOLON– Senior pitcher Todd Oberthien, junior shortstop Elijah Kane, and senior outfielder Chris McNutt were named to the first team WaMaC East All-Conference team.
Oberthien compiled a 5-1 record with a 0.13 ERA and 52 strike-outs. Kane hit .411 with 39 hits and four doubles. McNutt had a .409 hitting average with seven doubles, two triples and two home runs.
Senior outfielder Colton Dall (.365 average, 35 hits, eight doubles and a home run) was named to the second team, while senior Tim Lance and junior Mitch Silberstein received honorable mention status.

Evans places eighth in national wrestling tourney

SOLON– Lance Evans of Solon wrestled at a national wrestling tournament in Fargo North Dakota in July, earning All-American status by placing at a national tournament.

Booster Club Fall Sports Kickoff Friday, Aug. 23

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club Fall Sports Kickoff and Sports Drink Scrimmage is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 23, at Solon Spartan Stadium.
The concession stand will be open with a brown bag special, as has been done in previous years (except last year because of delays opening the new stadium).
The donation of sports drinks is encouraged as a free-will offering for admission to the event (both powder packages and bottles are acceptable).

Just keep swimming

A participant conquers the 50-meter swimming stage of the Just Tri Youth Triathlon in North Liberty Aug. 4. The second annual event had 98 registrants between the ages of 6 and 14 years.
