The King and Queen (pins) reign at West

Knosp, Shimon lead the way for Trojans

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The King and Queen Pins will reign supreme in the West High trophy case for the next year following the annual rivalry match between West and City High Friday, Feb. 8, at Colonial Lanes.
The West High boys won their match 2,934 to 2,858 to claim the King Pin while the girls knocked down 2,329 pins to City’s 2,218 to earn the Queen Pin. Noah Knosp led the Trojan boys with 466 while Mariah Shimon led the Women of Troy with 331.
According to West coach Mike Mellecker, the boys have a 6-6 record of earning the King and the girls are 7-5 for the Queen.

New kids on the block

Hawk Talk

It’s time to take a little break from basketball and wrestling as the Hawkeye football team signed 19 players last week. They plan to add a junior college defensive end this summer.
I always enjoy checking out the new recruits, whether it’s football, basketball or wrestling… the three sports I cover.
I always wonder who will be the next Shonn Greene, the next Aaron White or the next Bethany Doolittle.
All three we not highly recruited.
It also gives me a chance to talk to Reese Morgan, who is in his second year of coaching the defensive line.

UPSETS

I was going to concentrate on Iowa’s new football recruits this week but I have to give some love to the Hawkeye women’s and men’s basketball teams.
The Hawkeye women traveled to ninth-ranked Penn State and upset the Lady Lions, 73-70, last Thursday .
That’s the first time Iowa has beaten a top-10 team on the road since 1993.
The Hawks lost to Penn State 87-71 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena back on Jan. 5, and I have to admit I didn’t think Iowa had much of a chance.

Road win and home loss

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had a road trip to Minnesota and hosted Nebraska last week.
They knocked off the Gophers, 64-56, Wednesday and lost to Nebraska 80-76 Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa played Lisa Bluder ball against the Gophers.
That is, four players in double figures, solid defense and 17 assists on 24 baskets.
“Such a great team performance,” said coach Bluder. “I love the balance of our basketball team.”
That’s the 20th straight game Iowa has had at least three players finish in double figures.
How much more can you say about Samantha Logic?

Tough Enough

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men played two games last week, losing at home to Michigan State in overtime, 71-69, and winning at Illinois, 81-74.
There was a lot of talk after the loss to the Spartans about the lack of toughness on the Hawkeye team.
How about...
One more free throw in regulation and Iowa has a huge victory over the Spartans.
Just one more…
The Hawks came into the game shooting 72.5 percent from the charity stripe.
They hit 30-43 (69.8 percent) for the game.

Wrestlers crush Northwestern

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes had eight wins, including a pin from Tony Ramos (133) and cruised to a 31-6 victory at Northwestern Friday.
This time, there were no upsets according to the rankings.
Brody Grothus (149) was ranked 12th and was beaten by Jason Tsirtsis, 13-3. Jason was ranked fourth.
Also Bobby Telford (285) lost in overtime 3-1 to Mike McMullan. Bobby was ranked first or second in different polls and Mike was also ranked either first or second.
Cory Clark (125) wrestled for the first time in a month, had a couple of takedowns and back points for a 10-1 major decision.

Evans and Gnida are WaMaC champs

Solon finishes sixth in 15-team conference tourney

INDEPENDENCE– Lance Evans and Louis Gnida won their respective weight classes at the WaMaC wrestling tournament over the weekend, helping the Spartans to a sixth-place finish.
Heavyweight Logan Linderbaum finished third Saturday at Independence
Solon finished sixth in the 15-team tournament with 133.5 team points, sandwiched between Central DeWitt and Mount Vernon. Independence and West Delaware tied for the first place team title with 218.5 points.

Spartans fend off Maquoketa, fall at Dyersville Beckman

Head coach Brad Randall returns to team after complaint investigation

SOLON– The Solon boys basketball team won at home but lost on the road last week as it welcomed head coach Brad Randall back to the bench.
Randall returned to coaching Jan. 27, the day before the Spartans hosted winless Independence for a 72-49 win.
Solon also defeated Maquoketa 54-43 at home Friday, but suffered a 20-point loss on the road Thursday in a makeup game against Dyersville Beckman, 55-35.
“It was good to be back on the sidelines,” said Randall of the Independence win. “A lot of guys played and a lot of guys scored.”

Lady Spartans split two on the road

MAQUOKETA– It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season, but that’s what awaits the Solon Lady Spartans in the basketball postseason.
The girls open the second season Wednesday, Feb. 19, hosting Maquoketa, a team that has lost twice to the Lady Spartans.
The second of those wins came on the road last week, as Solon came out of Maquoketa with a 46-36 win over the Cardinals Friday.

Cougars hand Women of Troy another loss

IOWA CITY– A pair of decisive wins led to a pair of painful losses for the West High Women of Troy. After knocking off Bettendorf 63-35 and Waterloo East 61-18, coach BJ Mayer’s crew fell 60-51 at Valley High School in West Des Moines and struggled against the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars at home.

CCA boys fall to Mt. Vernon, girls suffer pair of losses
