Solon defeats Regina, splits with Muscatine and Indee

Juniors look to keep building momentum

SOLON– It’s hard to say whether the magic can be repeated.
But at least Solon baseball coach Keith McSweeney now has time to focus on baseball when he’s not teaching.
McSweeney’s varsity baseball team rode a winning streak into the state baseball tournament last year, shelling first-seeded Dubuque Wahlert 12-2 in the quarterfinals before falling 7-5 in the 3A semifinals to eventual champion No. 2 Harlan.
The Spartans have started the 2017 season with a 3-2 record, including a 5-4 win over Iowa City Regina May 25.

Marion boys take CCA 2A substate final 1-0

MARION– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ soccer team hasn’t been to the state tournament since 2014, and the Marion Indians ensured the Creek Boys will have to wait at least one more year by ending the Clippers’ season 1-0 Saturday, May 27, in a Class 2A substate final in Marion.
The Indians dealt what turned out to be the fatal blow in the 34th minute of the first half. The Clippers outshot the Indians, but were unable to score throughout the 80 minutes. The loss ended CCA’s season at 11-7 while Marion improved to 11-4.

Wins over Mason City and Waterloo West send IC West back to Des Moines

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Trojan varsity boys’ soccer team returns to Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines for the Class 3A State Soccer Tournament thanks to a pair of substate wins.
The Trojans started the postseason with a first-round bye while Mason City and Cedar Falls did battle in Cedar Falls on Monday, May 22, with the Mohawks winning 3-2 and advancing to face the 11-7 Trojans on Barker Field Wednesday, May 24. The Trojans pounded the 3-12 Mohawks, 8-0.

DYERSVILLE– Clear Creek Amana’s varsity softball team sailed into rough waters and sank Wednesday, May 24, in Dyersville as the Beckman Catholic Blazers took both halves of a doubleheader to open the 2017 season. Beckman took the opener, 7-2, and won the nightcap, 15-11.

TIFFIN– Cappy’s Boys had a rough opening to the 2017 varsity baseball season at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School in Tiffin. “Cappy,” a grizzled sea captain, is the unofficial mascot of the Clippers, AKA: “The Creek Boys.”
Washington’s Demons visited in Tiffin on Wednesday, May 24, and took both halves of a doubleheader, 7-4 and 12-8, on the diamond.

CCA closes out the regular season with wins over Anamosa and Monticello

TIFFIN– Tim Benson and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ soccer team closed out the regular season with a pair of shutout wins. The Creek Boys shelled visiting Anamosa 9-0 Tuesday, May 16, on Senior Night and journeyed to Monticello to blast the Panthers 7-0 Thursday, May 18. The wins improved CCA’s record to 10-6 ahead of postseason play and a shot at returning to the state tournament in Des Moines.

Women of Troy win state tennis quarterfinals

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy varsity tennis team handed Cedar Rapids Prairie a 5-1 loss in Class 2A state quarterfinal round action Tuesday, May 23, at the Westfield Tennis Club in Cedar Rapids. It was the second time this season West beat the defending state champion Prairie Hawks, slipping past them, 5-4, in April.

Amelon earns MVC Athlete of the Year

2017 All-Division girls’ golf selections released

IOWA CITY– West High’s Jordan Amelon earned Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year honors in the 2017 All-Division golf selections released Tuesday, May 23.
Dubuque Wahlert’s Katie Lenart was named the Division Coach of the Year while Wahlert took the Division Team Championship.


Flashback to 1983

It’s the time of year where I flashback, this time it’s 1983. The Iowa Hawkeye football team went 9-3, 7-2 in the Big Ten.
Some of the special events happening in 1983 included the last episode of M*A*S*H*. I saw the original movie, watched the series on TV, including the final, and I still watch the reruns. The final was viewed by over 125 million viewers, a record at the time.

DES MOINES– The Spartans traveled to the Blue Oval on Thursday, May 18, to battle more than just the competition in Des Moines at Drake Stadium during the 2017 Iowa State Track and Field Meet.
A dour sky, chill temperatures and strong wind gusts combined with a nagging rain to plague the first two days of the state championship competition. The event lasted three days and when the clouds finally parted on Saturday, May 20, the Spartans emerged among the finest the State of Iowa had to offer in class 3A competition.
