Orange-Out Sept. 4th Orange you glad you're a Spartan?
The Solon High School Athletic Department, along with the Solon High School football program, encourage all Spartan fans attending Friday night's football game between Solon and Regina to wear orange as part of an "Orange-Out"
Every Solon High School student will receive a free orange T-shirt (sponsored by Degree Deodorant) to wear to the game on Friday, and the school is hoping all fans will don their own orange Solon shirts to create a sea of orange in the stands and sidelines.
Show your Spartan spirit and wear orange on Friday as the team kicks off another great season.
Bridge Authority celebration Sept. 5 SOLON- The Sutliff Bridge Authority will hold its Fall Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 5, on Main Street in Sutliff. Music is from 1-5 p.m., featuring the Hot Hand Blues Band. Entry is $5 donation at the gate. Food and beverages will be available.
In addition, the Sutliff Bridge Authority will host a Ride to Revive Poker Run Saturday, Sept. 18. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in Sutliff. Bikes out at 11 a.m.
Fund Run Sept. 18 The Solon Spartan Fund Run, an annual fundraiser to benefit Solon schools, is scheduled for Sept. 18. Entry forms will be coming home with students and are available on www.spartanfundrun.com. Register today.

Baseball tryouts Sept. 11 Tryouts for 13U USSSA Baseball 2011 will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m. at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area baseball fields in Solon. The rain make-up date is Sunday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m.
A second tryout date is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18, at 9 a.m. and the rain make-up is Sep. 19, at 9 a.m. Call Don Maston at 319-543-0070 with questions.
Vanorny benefit Sept. 25 SHELLSBURG - A benefit for Dan Vanorny will be held Sept. 25, at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg. Dan, a Solon graduate, was injured in a motorcycle accident on June 11 and remains hospitalized in a semi-conscious state.
The benefit includes an 18 hole, four-person best shot: $200 per team includes golf and cart, begins at 8 a.m. (limit of 32 teams).
Hamburgers, hot dogs and brats will be served starting at 12:30 p.m. Live auction, silent auction and raffle begin at 2:30 p.m. Items include a big screen television, a half-side of beef with processing, a half side of hog with processing and many other prizes.
Everyone is welcome. Come join in the fun and raise money to help offset medical bills for Dan Vanorny and provide funding for his family to visit him.

JCHT's "Under a Cider Moon" to be held Oct. 9 at Celebration Barn JOHNSON COUNTY- The Johnson County Heritage Trust's (JCHT) annual fundraiser, "Under a Cider Moon ... A Celebration of Autumn," will be held Oct. 9, at Schwab's Celebration Barn, 2501 Sugar Bottom Rd., Solon.
The barn doors open at 5:30 p.m., silent auction starts at 6 p.m. and the live auction begins promptly at 7 p.m. Come early for a special preview and enjoy an evening at the barn.
The Guy Drollinger Trio will provide entertainment. Locally prepared food and refreshments from area wineries and brew pubs will be available. Dessert includes pie prepared by the winners of the 2010 Johnson County Fair's fourth annual Jo Beers Pie Contest.
Through the generosity of local merchants, businesses and artists, there will be a great selection of auction items for everyone. Attendees can bid on one-of-a-kind experiences including: outdoor adventures, sea kayak and fishing lessons, bird watching, turkey and mushroom hunting, an airplane ride, wine tasting, dinners, a vacation in the Cayman Islands, and a trip to Door County, Wis. A variety of art, jewelry and handmade furniture designed and created by local craftsman will be of interest to all.

The annual "Under a Cider Moon ... A Celebration of Autumn," event has been the most important fundraiser for the Trust, generating over $60,000 in the past three years. Proceeds help make it possible for the JCHT to continue its mission to preserve Iowa's natural heritage through protection and management of land and water with significant environmental value.
Register now for soccer, flag football SOLON- Registration for the Solon Recreation Department's Fall Soccer and Flag Football programs has begun. These programs are open to girls and boys age 5 to sixth grade. Registration deadline is August 31. Football games will be played on Monday evenings and soccer games on Tuesday evenings, starting tentatively September 13 and 14.

Democrats to meet Aug. 25 SOLON- All Solon-area Democrats are invited to join fellow Democrats, Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Solon Public Library.
The Solon Area Democrats provide organization and information for local, state and national Democratic Party candidates for the upcoming November election.

Senior Advocates plan Muscatine trip, river cruise SOLON- The Solon Senior Advocates' trip to Muscatine on Thursday, Aug. 26, will leave from Sam's Main Street Market parking lot at10 a.m. in three vehicles. The group will dine first at the Button Factory and then board the Pearl Paddlewheel boat around 1 p.m. for an hour-long cruise on the Mississippi. Following that excursion, people may either visit the Pearl Button Museum or browse the shops or ice cream store in the mini-mall adjacent to the restaurant.
Five additional van trips will take place from September through October and will be outlined in the Senior Advocate Newsletter inserted in the September 1 edition of the Solon Economist.

Local artist to showcase work in ARTapalooza Sept. 11 in Cedar Falls CEDAR FALLS - Lawrette "Lawrie" See of Blue Butterfly Designs has been accepted into the fifth annual ARTapalooza fine art show on Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Held annually, the juried show brings many talented artists from throughout the region to the streets and sidewalks of downtown Cedar Falls. As one of the select groups of artists, Lawrie See will be showcasing her artwork as part of the community art celebration.
See specializes in making Lampwork/sandblasted handmade glass beads using Czech, German, Italian and Chinese glasses and one of a kind copper and sterling silver wirework jewelry art pieces.

Red Cedar Chamber Music to give Solon performance on Oct. 13 SOLON- Red Cedar Chamber Music will give a concert at Saints Peter & Paul Community Center north of Solon, at 1165 Taft Ave. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. The event is free. For information call 319-644-2394.
"Saying Large Things With Small Voices" is a rural outreach performance featuring tuneful early 19th-century Viennese trios and duos by Francesco Molino, Anton Diabelli and Mauro Giuliani. Performed on instruments from the period by Red Cedar Trio members. They are flutist Jan Boland, violist David Miller and guitarist John Dowdall.

TEE Tournament to be Sept. 6-9 IOWA CITY- A golf and bowling rehabilitation Program for Veterans who are legally blind, amputees, those who use wheelchairs and Veterans with other disabilities, the National Veterans TEE Tournament (NVTT) uses a therapeutic format to promote rehabilitation, fellowship and camaraderie among its participants. This national event will take place in the Iowa City area from Monday, Sept. 6, to Thursday Sept. 9, 2010.
The Iowa City VAMC, with support from community volunteers, hosts this annual event.
