IOWA CITY– A familiar face returns to the Iowa City West High softball diamond next summer as Barb Lynn has been hired as the head coach for the West High Women of Troy varsity softball program.
Athletic Director Craig Huegel recommended Lynn for the position on Sept. 5 and she was approved by the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 12. She replaces Justin Lutjen, who resigned at the conclusion of the 2017 season.
“I am excited to be back in the green and gold,” Lynn commented. “I have many fond memories at the West High diamond as a player and coach and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. With this being West High’s 50th year, it’s time to reflect upon the wonderful years behind us and use this history to drive us forward.”
Lynn took over the West High program in 2013 after Jeff Kelley’s resignation at the end of the 2012 season. Kelley returned to coaching this year and now leads the Liberty High varsity softball program. Lynn, now a math teacher at Liberty High, spent one year with the Women of Troy with a 22-20 record before leaving and assuming the top spot at Clear Creek Amana. Lynn was with the Clippers for three seasons and took the Creek Girls to the state tournament in Fort Dodge in 2014 where they went 0-3 for eighth place. Overall Lynn had a 63-59 record with the Clippers.
