Boys nudged out of second place at Spartan Invite
SOLON– There will be lots of golfing for the next month, as the Solon Spartans swing through the bulk of their schedule.
Solon’s varsity boys golf squad will be back home next week for two home dates before heading into postseason tournaments.
“I feel this group has a lot of potential,” said head coach Adam Stahle. “A lot of kids put in time over the summer.”
Stahle said there are 29 high school boys out for golf, with three letter winners returning from last year– Jared Capouch, Josh Kleppe and Spencer Schaefer.
In addition, Charlie Jedlicka and Jake Singkofer return with varsity experience, joining newcomers Marcus Martin, Noah Erickson, Adam Fuller and Sterling McIlravy.
The Spartans opened the season with a team score of 178 at a Williamsburg triangular April 7, just behind the host team and well ahead of Center Point-Urbana (207). Marcus Martin shot a 43 to lead the Spartans, followed by Josh Kleppe and Jared Capouch with a pair of 44s. Jake Singkofer (47), Charlie Jedlicka (54), and Austin Heinsius (56) rounded out Solon’s scores.
A tighter grouping of scores came April 10 at Mount Vernon, when the three teams all were spaced within 20 points of each other.
Central DeWitt edged host Mount Vernon, 159-160, while the Spartans shot a respectable 176. Capouch led the team with a 43, followed by Martin and Jedlicka with 44s, Kleppe with a 45 and Singkofer and Spencer Schaefer with a 48.
The boys placed third at the eight-team Spartan Invite April 11.
Durant took the team title with a 334, while West Branch (350) nudged out Solon (350) on a fifth score for second place.
Schaefer led the Solon scoring with an 84, followed by Capouch (90), Martin (91), Kleppe (93), Jedlicka (95) and Singkofer (96).
The Spartans host Anamosa, West Delaware and Central DeWitt Monday, April 28, and welcome Western Dubuque Thursday, May 1.
