TIFFIN– Call it the Clippers’ shakedown cruise. The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys took to the hardwood Tuesday, Nov. 29, at home to face the Bobcats of Western Dubuque in the 2016-17 season opener. It also marked the debut of new head coach Brandon Clubb. Turnovers, inexperience and losing the rebound battle torpedoed the Creek Boys, leading to a 66-34 loss.
Cory Siders put the Clippers on the scoreboard first for a 2-0 lead, but the Bobcats quickly pulled ahead to take the period 15-8. Tate Thomsen fired up the CCA student section with a 3-pointer, the only Clipper three-bomb of the game, in the second period, but the home team still trailed, 20-13, on their way to a 34-20 halftime deficit. The Bobcats ended the half with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Tyler Hallett provided a spark of hope as he opened the third period with a 2-point basket. Unfortunately for the Creek Boys, they were outscored 17-9 in the quarter and trailed 51-29 going into the final period. The Bobcats held the Clippers to only 5 points in the final eight minutes while racking up 15 points.
Tate Thomsen led the Clippers with a dozen points, followed by Siders with 9 and Hallett with 5.
The Clippers travel to Center Point on Friday, Dec. 9, to take on the Center Point-Urbana Stormin’ Pointers with a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off. The Pointers opened with a 72-39 win over Maquoketa on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
