Cougars sweep the Bolts

CR Kennedy knocks off Liberty, 9-7 and 10-8

NORTH LIBERTY– The Cedar Rapids Kennedy varsity baseball team moved to the top of the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Valley Division with a sweep of the Liberty High Lightning on Thursday, June 25, at Liberty. The Cougars improved to 4-0 in the conference, and 6-0 overall, while the Lightning dropped to 2-2 in conference play, and 5-3 overall.
Kennedy opened game one with two runs in the top of the first. The Bolts plated one runner in the bottom of the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth to lead, 6-2, but it was a seven-run bombardment in the sixth that sealed Liberty’s fate. The Lightning plated one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Alec Boldt knocked a double, while Nolan Frey, Sam Funke, T.J. Kimm and Tyler Dahm hit one single apiece. In addition, Jacob Norris went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of singles. Kimm drove in two runs, as did Dahm.
Jonah Warren pitched 5-1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs with three strikeouts. Zack Anderson and Kolton Fangman spent a third of an inning each on the bump. Anderson gave up two runs and struck out one. Dahm worked the mound for one inning of no-hit ball with a pair of strikeouts.
Tom Cronk’s Bolts reloaded for the nightcap, drawing first blood with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kennedy plated two in the top of the second, which was answered by three Bolts scurrying home for a 4-2 lead. Liberty added a run in the third, but the Cougars tacked on three runs in the fourth to tie, 5-5. The Lightning looked to be on-track for a split, putting up two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Unfortunately, another late attack, this time in the form of five runs in the top of the seventh, sealed their doom.
Boldt cranked out his second double of the night, while Cody Schroeder slapped one as well. Norris had three hits, with Frey and Schroeder knocking two apiece. Keian Secrist and Cayden Duhaime had one hit apiece for Liberty, as well. Frey drove in three runs, Secrist had two RBI, and Duhaime and Schroeder brought in one runner each. Secrist spent five innings on the mound, giving up two hits and five runs, striking out four.
