Creek Girls escape Lightning Bolts

CCA tops Liberty, 64-58

NORTH LIBERTY– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls basketball team picked up a pair of wins Friday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 6, extending its winning streak to five games and improving its record to 6-4. The Clippers defeated Central Clinton, DeWitt, 50-38, Friday night and faced the Liberty Lightning in a varsity girl-boy doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Bolts fell, 55-32, Tuesday, Jan. 2, at home to Dubuque Hempstead and were topped 64-58 by the Creek Girls for their second-consecutive loss and a 5-7 record.
The Lightning struck first with a 4-0 lead from Sam McPherson and Isabel Smith before the Clippers’ Andrea Roller sank a 3-pointer. CCA standout Karsyn Stratton handed the Creek Girls a 5-4 lead as the Clippers sailed to a 10-5 lead at the end of the first period. McPherson and Kayli Baldwin delivered a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as Liberty initially kept pace with the Clippers, trailing by one point, 14-13.
A momentum shift led the Clippers on an eight-point run including another 3-pointer from Roller. Liberty charged back late in the period, and trailed the Clippers 26-20 at halftime.
McPherson unloaded a pair of threes in the third period to keep the Lightning alive, but the home team still lagged behind 42-30 going into the final eight minutes. Cora Saunders produced a trio of 3-point shots in the fourth period as Liberty fought to within two points of CCA, trailing 58-56 late in the period.
Stratton led all scorers with 29 points while Saunders had a team-high 21 for Liberty.
CCA’s scorers included Jordan Neely with nine points, Ainsley Schrock with five, four points each from Whitney Traetow and Meagan Harvey and two from Alison Rummelhart. The Clippers host Marion Friday, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The Creek Girls fell twice to the Indians last season, and Marion held the top spot in Class 4A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Jan. 4 rankings with an 11-0 record as-of Sunday, Jan. 7. CCA travels to Van Horne on Tuesday, Jan. 16, to face Benton Community for the second time this season. The Creek Girls disposed of the Bobcats, 59-38, in early December.
Liberty’s scorers included McPherson with 16 points including four 3-pointers, Brylee Klosterman with eight points, Smith contributed four points with three apiece from Emily Larsen and Baldwin, while Megan Davis added one free throw. The Lightning travel to Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly on Friday, Jan. 12, for a varsity girl-boy doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. The GoHawks were 7-4 as-of Sunday, Jan. 7. Liberty hosts Dubuque Wahlert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Golden Eagles were 3-8 after falling to Iowa City West High Friday, Jan. 5.
