Donnie E. Shull, 72, of North Liberty, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral Services were held Sept. 9 at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Donnie Shull Memorial Fund.
Donnie was born on Aug. 28, 1941, in Washington, the son of Donald and Mildred (Cook) Shull. After moving to Iowa City at a young age, Donnie grew up and attended schools in Iowa City and continued to remain a resident of the Iowa City area throughout his life.
Donnie enlisted in The U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country from 1959-1963. A short time after being honorably discharged, Donnie married Judy Krall at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City on June 27, 1964, and the couple recently celebrated their 49th anniversary together.
In 1999 Donnie retired from the U.S. Postal Service with over 30 years of service as an accountant and a postal clerk. Since his retirement, he enjoyed driving for local dealers, making a trip to Chicago as recently as this past Wednesday. In his free time, he enjoyed trips to Canada, spending time with his family and especially teasing his grandkids during a competitive game of cards.
Survivors include his wife Judy of North Liberty, a son Terry (Darla) Shull of Coralville, a daughter Cathy (James) Deatsch of North Liberty, a sister Marian Hendricks of Bettendorf, five grandchildren: Tyler, Samantha, Tiffany, Brandon and Carrie; and six great-grandchildren.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Martha Sovers and Vera Duffy.
