Early out activity Oct. 18

The general election is less than four weeks away. If you are not yet registered to vote, stop by the library and pick up a voter registration form.

Library landscapers
Everyone passing by the library enjoys the circles of flowers at the front of the parking lot. A very small group of dedicated gardeners called the Library Landscaping Committee works diligently throughout the year to create the flower gardens. This fall, the Library Landscaping Committee is looking for help to plant a special tulip bed. Tentative dates for the project are as follows: On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m., gardeners will meet to clean and prepare the middle circle. The preferred planting date will be either Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. or Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. If you’d like to join the library landscapers, give Betty a call at 319-624-2294 and she’ll be glad to put you to work. Many hands make light work and the community will get to enjoy lovely tulips next spring.

Solon book club is Tuesday, Oct. 16
The Solon Area Book Club will feature the One Community, One Book selection, “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir” by Kao Kalia Yang at their Tuesday, Oct. 16, meeting. The discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. One Community, One Book has been an annual event occurring between September and November. Five area libraries, including Solon Public Library, hold forums and book discussions.
In the memoir, the author pays tribute to her grandmother. This story of a refugee family begins in the war-torn jungles of Laos, continues in the refugee camps of Thailand and eventually concludes with emigration to America when the author, Yang was six years old.
For questions about the book club, please contact Joyce at jebarta@southslope.net. To borrow a copy of a selected book, please contact the library circulation desk by calling 319-624-2678 or email Jacque at jdeaton@solon.lib.ia.us.

Check out library for indoor activities
With colder weather upon us, and activities shifting indoors, remember that the library has some great puzzles to check out. We’ve recently added several new puzzles for children and adults that were donated. Thanks to everyone for your on-going puzzle donations.
And don’t forget regular books, too. What’s better than curling up with a good book on a cool Fall evening? Don’t forget to enter the adult reading prize every time you finish a book, too. You could be the lucky winner of the monthly $10 prize, like Paula Werner was for September. This prize is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

New audio books available
Audio books are a great way to pass the time while in the car or while cooking dinner at home. Here are some new ones you may want to check out:
“The Money Smart Family System: Teaching Financial Independence to Children of Every Age” by Steve and Annette Economides.
“You Don’t Know Much About the American Presidents” by Kenneth C. Davis.
“Severe Clear” by Stuart Woods.
“A Wanted Man” by Lee Child.
“Zoo” by James Patterson.
“Gone” by Randy Wayne White.
“Telegraph Avenue” by Michael Chabon.

Friends of the Library news
When you’re digging out Halloween costumes for this year’s trick-or-treating (and the library’s children’s costume party on Oct. 29), if you run across costumes that the kids have outgrown, donate them to the Friends of the Library. Friends are starting a costume recycling program, and these costumes will be available next October as a fund-raiser for friends. We will accept adult costumes as well, as long as they are in good taste and appropriate for older children to wear.
Another new friends fund-raiser will be Thanksgiving jar mixes. Need a hostess gift to take with you to a relative’s house for Thanksgiving? Or something special to treat yourself after it’s all over? Friends will have four jar mix gifts available to pre-order until Nov. 7. Order forms are available at the library or by emailing SolonLibrFriends@aol.com. All jars are priced below $5 and will be available for pick-up starting Nov. 16.
And finally, mark your calendar now for a special program on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. The friends are sponsoring a Seniors Downsizing Program with lots of information packed into a one hour program on how to start the process of de-cluttering, downsizing, and organizing your life for that next smaller sized house or condo. It’s a free program, and no reservations are necessary. More information is available at the library or by emailing friends.
