Ed Hadenfeldt named Cornell College Alumni Coach of the Year

MOUNT VERNON– Cornell College honored Ed Hadenfeldt of Solon as the 2015 Alumni Coach of the Year during an Oct. 3 ‘C’ Club Breakfast and Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Hadenfeldt, a member of Cornell’s All-Century Football Team, retired last spring after 37 years in coaching and education. He got his start at Sioux City Heelan High School as head wrestling and assistant football and track and field coach.
Hadenfeldt spent the next 36 years teaching and coaching at Solon High School. He was heavily involved in the program’s run of athletics success as a coach in football, wrestling and track and field.
The Marengo native served as defensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the football team, helping the Spartans compile a 297-77 record with only three non-winning seasons in 36 years. Solon won five state championships and finished as state runner-up six times. During his time on the sidelines, Hadenfeldt was named Iowa Assistant Coach of the Year.
Hadenfeldt coached all levels of wrestling at Solon from youth to head varsity coach. The 2008 WaMaC Conference Coach of the Year guided two individual state champions and numerous state qualifiers and place winners. Solon renamed its annual wrestling tournament the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational, three years ago, when he retired as wrestling coach.
Hadenfeldt coached junior high and assistant varsity track for 30 years, specializing in the throwing events. Solon claimed one state team championship and two runner-up finishes.
During his playing days at Cornell, Hadenfeldt was a four-year starting offensive tackle and a two-time all-conference selection. He helped lead the Rams to the 1976 Midwest Conference football championship during his senior season, when he was voted team MVP. Hadenfeldt was voted Cornell’s 1977 Sportsman of the Year.
Hadenfeldt and his wife Mary have three sons: Adam (Cornell ’04), Aaron (Coe ’10) and August (Northern Iowa ’12). All three sons are teachers and coaches.
