Eister of Tiffin among 2014 Lifesaving Award honorees
DES MOINES– Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad recognized six individuals for unselfish service to their fellow citizens and family members on Aug. 15 at the Iowa State Fair. The governor’s Lifesaving Awards Ceremony recognized citizens who helped a friend or neighbor in critical need of assistance, and in turn, became everyday heroes. There are four categories in which honorees are recognized: lifesaving with valor, lifesaving, meritorius service, and outstanding service.
Shondra Eister of Tiffin received an award for outstanding service.
On Dec. 31, 2013 at approximately 5 p.m. Shonda Eister (eye-stir) and her father Lawrence had been working in their yard doing chores. After coming into their home Lawrence’s clothing caught on the basement railing. After attempting to remove the clothing from the railing Lawrence slipped and fell to the bottom of the stairs where he became unresponsive. Shonda immediately assessed the situation and called 911. Upon receiving the call the dispatcher gave Shonda instructions on how to perform CPR. Shonda immediately started and continued CPR until help arrived on scene. Thanks to Shonda’s immediate actions her father received lifesaving treatment.
