Englert rolls out the red carpet for Academy Awards event

IOWA CITY – On Sunday, March 7, The Englert Theatre will host a fundraising event unlike any the theatre has seen before.
A live screening of the Academy Awards, “Hollywood Live! Hosted by Chris Okiishi” will also feature movie-themed food and costume contests, “The Winning Envelope” grab bags, and a silent auction. Admission to this event is free (although small donations at the door are welcome).
When entering the theatre, guests will be greeted (and possibly interviewed) by Bill Nusser and Catherine Champion, the hosts of KXIC’s “Downtown Dish.” Christopher Okiishi, theatre enthusiast and a well-known personage in the Iowa City/Coralville area, will host the event and help guide traffic to the different activities taking place throughout the theatre. In addition to watching the awards ceremony, guests are invited to “play along” by completing their own Oscar ballots, view the recorded red carpet festivities in the Englert Gallery to cast their own votes for best- and worst-dressed celebrity, and vote on their favorite movie-themed food.
According to Englert Development Director Nancy Mayfield, “Community support for this fundraiser has been spectacular. We are very grateful to the New Pioneer Co-op, KCRG, US Bank, Hands Jewelers, and many others for making this the party of the year.”
Prizes for the costume/food contests, “Winning Envelopes,” and silent auction are provided by: Best Buy, Buzz, Hancher Auditorium, Hands Jewelers, hotelVetro, Share, Sheraton of Iowa City, Target and many more! The Englert Theatre will include two “Golden Tickets” as prizes – tickets that are good for every Englert Series event for 12 months.
Prizes will also be awarded for the “Best Dressed Guest – Glamour” for the most glamorous patron to attend the event, and “Best Dressed Guest – Costume,” someone dressed like a character from one of the nominated films.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. when the red carpet is unrolled and the doors are opened. Patrons are invited to get interviewed and photographed on the red carpet, to fill out their ballots, peruse the auction items, and enjoy free appetizers. The Academy Awards presentation starts at 7 p.m.
