Gary Gene Moel, 64, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, March 31, 2014, at Iowa City Mercy Hospice surrounded by his family. Services were April 4 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Private family burial followed at Cedar Memorial Cemetery, where full military rites were conducted by the North Liberty American Legion, Post 1976.
Gary was born Feb. 16, 1950, to Dean Moel and Betty (Umsted) Moel in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Solon High School, served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1970 until 1971, and worked for 39 years at Hawkeye Food Systems in Coralville until his retirement in 2011.
Gary is survived by his father Dean Moel of Lisbon; sons Eric (Kelly) Moel of Edgington, Ill. and Casey (Joy) Moel of Iowa City; his grandchildren Ashley, Clay, Isaac, Logan, Brandon, Samuel, and Erica; his siblings Linda (Phil) Shimerda of San Antonio, Texas, Jack (Kris) Moel of Sutliff, Patti (Jerry) Schott of Marion, and Mike (Kathy) Moel of Solon; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Lou Moel and his friend Donna Brus.
