Geneva M. Shannon, 85, of Coralville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Mercy Hospice Unit of Mercy Iowa City. Funeral Services were held Aug. 16 at St. Thomas More Church, Coralville. Visitation at Lensing’s Oak Hill was on Aug. 15 and at St. Thomas More Catholic Church prior to the funeral service. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Geneva M. Murphy was born Oct. 19, 1928, to Joseph J. and Dora H. (Smith) Murphy at the family farm near Spring Valley, Wisconsin. She attended rural school near her home, and graduated from Spring Valley High School. Geneva married Daniel E. Shannon on Sept. 30, 1950, in at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church El Paso, Wisconsin. They moved to Iowa in 1958. To this union were born, Gregory, Beth, and Patrick. In addition, she raised Dan’s bother, John, while he was a teenager. Geneva was an office worker, then a stay-at-home mom, then became a licensed real estate broker for 25 years. She enjoyed playing bridge, quilting and family activities. Geneva was a hard worker and an exceptional homemaker, and will be remembered as a wonderful wife and mother.
She is survived by Daniel of Coralville, Gregory (Sharon) of Columbus, Ohio, Beth of North Liberty, Patrick (Sylvia) of Cedar Rapids, John (Peggy) of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She is also survived by five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and Callie her Calico cat. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joe, and sister, Carol Cody.
