Girls find offense against Anamosa

SOLON– For three quarters against Dyersville Beckman, the Lady Spartans couldn’t buy a bucket.
Against Anamosa, they were coming cheap.
Solon’s girls found their offense against Anamosa Friday night at home, posting a 59-27 win that was just what the doctor ordered after a 28-27 loss Tuesday at Dyersville Beckman.
Ten different Lady Spartans scored and 11 recorded rebounds in the blowout win.
“I was very pleased,” said Head Coach Mark Sovers. “It was by far our best effort over four quarters.
“I’ve got to give them credit for coming back after a tough loss,” he said of his team.
That tough loss came at Beckman, where Solon jumped out to a 14-4 first quarter lead but fell into an offensive slump that gave them only 13 points for the rest of the game.
But defense kept them in the game until the end. The Lady Spartans had 17 steals against Beckman, including five and four for guards Rylee Smith and Kristen Purdy.
“We had a hard time with their height,” Sovers observed of Beckman. “They got to the foul line a little bit too much.” Beckman had 13 free throw attempts to Solon’s three. Neither team had a player in double digits for scoring, although Smith led Solon with five and Karly Kramer added four. The Lady Spartans shot 29 percent from the field. Solon lost the rebound battle by a slight margin. Ashley Holubar led the team with four.
“I think we had two points in the second quarter,” Sovers said. “We had chances to make it much harder for them to overcome that lead.”

The scores left on the court at Beckman bubbled back for Solon when they hosted Anamosa Friday.
Holubar led the scoring with 15 points, while Smith added 13. The Lady Spartans shot 43 percent from the field while holding Anamosa to 22 percent.
Solon also enjoyed a massive 43-19 rebound advantage, led by Alyssa Rickels off the bench with 10. Smith added nine, and Holubar had five boards and four blocked shots, in what Sovers said was her best overall game.
Smith also had four of Solon’s 17 steals, while Anamosa was able to pry away only one steal for the game.
“We got to loose basketballs and created more opportunities for ourselves,” he noted. “We played at our highest level yet.”
The win evens off the Lady Spartans’ record at 5-5, with Maquoketa coming to town Tuesday, Jan. 10. Then the girls hit the road against West Delaware Friday, Jan. 13, and host Central DeWitt Tuesday, Jan. 17.
