Girls win two in a row
SOLON– Rylee Smith and Ashley Holubar led the Lady Spartans on girls’ basketball senior night. Smith scored 10 points in the first half and Holubar provided points in the paint in the second half to keep senior night Jan. 31 a happy last home game.
Solon defeated Dyersville Beckman, 46-45, after building a double-digit lead and then hanging on in the fourth quarter.
The one-point difference was a reverse of a one point loss against Dyersville Beckman on Jan. 3 when Solon fell, 27-28, to their WaMaC East Division rivals.
This time, Solon piled on an early lead and coasted into halftime ahead 28-10.
The Beckman Blazers came out of the locker rooms fired up and outscored the home team 17-9 in the third, getting as close as eight points. But the team in green and yellow still started a see-saw fourth quarter down by 10 points, 37-27.
In the final quarter, Solon’s comfortable lead disappeared as Beckman again held Solon to just nine points.
The visiting Blazers took a one-point lead, 38-37, with five minutes to play. Minutes later Beckman still clung to a one-point advantage, 40-39.
Solon regrouped and drew a handful of quick fouls, controlling much of the offensive tempo to beat back Beckman’s rally.
Solon held a four-point lead after Katelyn Anderson’s free throw, but a Beckman three-point bomb brought the Blazers back with 30 seconds left.
The home team rode out the rest of the clock and Solon’s narrow lead held as time expired.
Smith led the Solon scoring with 17 points, including 4-4 from the free throw line. Karly Kramer had six rebounds.
The Lady Spartans made it two in a row Friday night, traveling to Maquoketa for a come-from-behind 53-45 win.
Down by two points to start the fourth quarter, Solon went on a 15-5 run to close out the game. Holubar led the balanced scoring with 12 points, while Smith added 10. Kristen Purdy and Emma Rickels each added eight. Rickels had a team-high seven rebounds.
After a trip to Anamosa Feb. 7, the Lady Spartans play their final regular season game Friday, Feb. 9, at Williamsburg. Postseason play begins Wednesday, Feb. 15, against Central DeWitt in DeWitt.
