A great start to the season

MARION– Solon’s Lady Spartan soccer squad traveled north to Marion last Tuesday and won their first game of the season, 4-0.
Junior Ali Herdliska scored the first goal on a great shot from the outside four minutes into the first half with an assist from Senior Anna Seydel.
The new season has brought strong freshmen to the team.
Ninth grader Josie Durr dominated the scoreboard with one goal in the first half and two more in the second.
“I think we had a great start to the season tonight. We really worked well together and did a great job of keeping possession, and creating scoring opportunities. Josie Durr did an outstanding job, getting the hat trick tonight, while Anna Seydel was solid at the midfield, getting two assists.” said Coach John Tucker. “I was extremely proud of the girls coming off the bench. The level of play stayed at a high level and we were able to see some different players in positions that they normally might not play.”
Goalie Katie Silberstein had three saves.
Thursday brought on another great team effort when Solon traveled to Muscatine for a non-conference match. Although the girls showed strength, ultimately the defense couldn’t stop a loss with a final score of 4-1.
“We still have some things to iron out, but again, I was very proud of the effort, and pleased at the way we came together Thursday and played so well against a very good Muscatine team,” commented Tucker.
Friday, the Lady Spartans hosted their first home game against West Liberty. The opening week’s hectic schedule of three matches in four days didn’t stop the girls from being victorious with a lopsided 10-0 win with over 21 minutes still remaining in the second half.
Solon scored eight goals in the first half and two in the second period to force the mercy rule. Goals were scored by Brianna Pike (2) Alyssa Stotler (2), Herdliska, Emma Moss, Seydel, Jade Flansburg and Durr (2).
The Lady Spartan defense allowed no shots at goal by West Liberty.
“I honestly believe the team is going to do great things this year,” senior co-captain Seydel said. “We have a lot of talent and I’m looking forward to the rest of my senior year. This soccer team is truly like a family for me and I’m going to miss every single one of them.”
This week will bring much needed rest for the team and a chance to recharge for Monday’s home match against West Delaware April 21.
