IC West boys tame CR Kennedy, 83-53

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Trojans extended their win streak to eight consecutive games with an 83-53 pounding of the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The Trojans rocketed to a 22-8 lead at the end of the first period and held a commanding 44-18 lead at halftime. The Cougars’ best period came in the third with a 21-point counter-attack, but the West High juggernaut was still ahead 60-39 heading into the final quarter.
Patrick McCaffery led West with a game-high 25 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Four Trojans were in double-digits with Devontae Lane scoring 19 points (including three 3-point baskets) before getting ejected for a pair of technical fouls, Connor McCaffery putting in 14 points and Seybian Sims contributing a dozen. Evan Flitz and Hakeem Odunsi added six points apiece while Izaya Ono-Fullard had a two-point night.
The win boosted the Trojans to 13-1 while dropping the Cougars to 10-5. Kennedy was led by Drake Brewster with 17 points.
West High hosts Waterloo West on Thursday, Feb. 9, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity tipoff and then heads for Kansas for a Saturday, Feb. 11, contest rescheduled from Jan. 14 due to an ice storm that impacted much of the Midwest. The Trojans are at Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and will play the final home game of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 16, against Cedar Rapids Xavier.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has assigned West to Substate No. 5 with Clinton, rival City High, Linn-Mar, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley. Pairings will be released by the IHSAA the second week of February with the first round of substate games set for Monday, Feb. 20. The semifinal round is set for Friday, Feb. 24, and the substate finals will be on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
