TIFFIN– The 2020-2021 varsity season ended for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) girls Saturday, Feb. 20, with a surprising 54-36 loss to the Marion Indians in a Class 4A regional semifinal game in Tiffin. The Clippers, ranked No. 14 in Class 4A, knocked off Marion in last year’s regional championship to earn their first-ever girls state basketball tournament appearance. Also, the Creek Girls defeated the Indians 51-41 in Marion earlier this month.
Marion racked up a 5-0 lead in the first period and held CCA scoreless for the first four minutes before Reese Stockman could put in the first two points of the night. Stockman followed up with another basket, and combined with a two-point shot from Morgan Etscheidt, CCA trailed 7-6 at the end of the quarter. An Ava Locklear free throw tied the game 7-7 in the second period, and a Locklear basket tied it again 9-9. A pair of three-point baskets from Kalin Rotzoll and Olivia Miller gave CCA a 15-13 lead as the Clippers took the half 19-18 with four points from Locklear and Stockman.
The Indians went on the warpath in the third period with a 21-3 scoring assault, including five three-point baskets for a 39-22 lead. Calia Clubb scored all three points in the quarter from the free throw line. Clubb put up back-to-back baskets in the fourth to make it 39-26, Gabrielle Bedford nailed a free throw, and Clubb sank two more charity shots to cut the gap to 10 points, 39-29 with six minutes remaining. Foul trouble sent Marion to the line five times in the following four minutes leading to a 46-34 Marion advantage. Clipper coach PJ Sweeney cleaned off his bench in the final minute with Dayna Wichhart, Bedford, Haley Tackaberry and Bailey Olerich seeing playing time.
Clubb, a junior, led the Clippers with 12 points while freshman Stockman had 10.
CCA ended the season at 17-5 overall and 15-3 in the WaMaC conference with a share of the conference championship.
Marion improved to 14-8 overall and advanced to the 4A Region 5 championship on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Central DeWitt against the fourth-ranked, and 15-2, Sabers.
