Six West High athletes commit

IOWA CITY– They signed on the line and formalized their commitments. Six West High athletes– Jasmine Bailey, Tyus Adkins, Declan Doyle, Wyatt Lohaus, Tereysa Lehnertz and Adrienne Jensen– signed national letters of intent at a signing ceremony in the school cafeteria Wednesday, Nov. 13.
For Lohaus, it was a mere formality for family, friends and admirers as he’d already committed to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) to play basketball in August 2012, just prior to his junior year. His dad, Brad Lohaus, was a center at the University of Iowa (UI), but the younger Lohaus found UNI to be a better fit for his style of play.
“He’s (Brad) very happy for me, he likes UNI a lot, and he was just happy I found the best place for me. I just felt comfortable there, the players there all seem like they get along really well, like family instead of just teammates. I like being close to my teammates, and their style of play, I think, fits me well.” Lohaus sees similarities between the Trojan style of basketball under coach Steve Bergman, and the Panther style under coach Ben Jacobson.
“I think coach Bergman gets a lot of his stuff from coach Jacobson, and talks to him a lot, so I don’t think it should be too much of a change.” UNI put out a press release with comments from Jacobson echoing the perfect fit.
“Our program is thrilled to add Wyatt today,” Jacobson said. “He has proven himself to be a tremendous leader and teammate. Wyatt’s work ethic and competitiveness are terrific and have allowed him to improve his game every year. He comes from a quality high school program that has had great success. All of these things make Wyatt a perfect fit.”
Lohaus, a 6’2” guard, has 763 career points going into his senior season with 355 last year. “I’d like to play point guard there,” Lohaus said, “but I’ll play wherever they want me to.”
Jasmine Bailey signed to join the women’s wrestling program at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill.. The Bearcats added the program in March of this year. For Bailey, it was an easy choice. “I’m really excited about their program,” she said. “It’s a new program so there’s a lot of excitement around it, I think I have a lot of potential, and it’s going to be great.” Bailey is the latest in a family of wrestlers, has earned All-American honors, is competing at the national level, and, “I would really love to go to the 2016 Olympics, so that’s what I’m aiming toward now.”
Last season Bailey amassed a 23-21 record with 10 pins, two major decisions and three decisions helping the Trojans with 125 team points.
Two of coach Charlie Stumpff’s Trojan baseball players signed on the line, Tyus Adkins and Declan Doyle. Adkins will play for Upper Iowa University in Fayette while Doyle is going west to Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
Adkins scored 17 runs this years on 42 hits in 129 at-bats. He had two homers, two triples and a dozen doubles as well as 24 RBI, three sacrifices and stole five bases. On the mound Adkins had a 9-1 record with 60-2/3 innings pitched. He gave up 18 runs, 14 earned for an ERA of 1.62 and recorded 51 strikeouts. Doyle scored 22 runs on 40 hits at 123 at-bats with a pair of homers, and 13 doubles. Doyle drove-in 31 runs, had one sacrifice and stole four bases.
Next fall, Drake University will see a new women’s tennis player in Bulldog Blue as Adrienne Jensen joins the ranks. Jensen advanced as far as the quarterfinal round of the United States Tennis Association’s regional tournament, held back in January in Tucson, Ariz. She is also considered a “three-star recruit,” according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Tereysa Lehnertz has spent a lot of time in the University of Iowa’s swimming pool, so it’s no wonder the UI is where she has committed for her collegiate career. Her honors include: the Puerto Rico Junior National Team, the National Diversity Select Camp 2012, High School Varsity letter winner and USA Swimming 2012-2013 Scholastic All-America Team, according to collegeswimming.com.
