Iowa City West clobbers Dubuque Wahlert

Women of Troy fry the Golden Eagles, 76-28

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy improved their varsity basketball record to 8-2 Friday, Jan. 5, on the road at Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School. West High fried the Wahlert Golden Eagles, 76-28, and delivered Wahlert’s fifth loss in a row and a 3-8 record.
West High exploded out of the gate with a 26-point effort in the first period while giving up only 10 points. West led 48-18 at halftime and held a very comfortable 62-24 lead going into the final period.
Emma Koch, a junior, led four Women of Troy in double-digit scoring with 17 points. Lauren Zacharias, a junior, had 16 points while Cailyn Morgan (junior) and Matayia Tellis (freshman) produced 11 points each. Logan Cook (senior) contributed eight points, Rachael Saunders (senior) added six, freshman Audrey Koch produced five points and senior Paige Beckner put up two points. Emma Koch led on the boards with eight rebounds while Carrie Callahan (senior), Cook and Beckner came up with four each.
West High maintained its No. 3 position in Class 5A, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings issued Thursday, Jan. 4. Iowa City, City High was ranked No. 1 at 10-0 with Cedar Falls in the second spot at 9-1.
The Women of Troy entertain 7-3 (as of Saturday, Jan. 6) Cedar Rapids Washington Friday, Jan. 12 at home at 7:30 p.m. West defeated the Warriors 77-43 one year ago in Cedar Rapids. Bolingbrook (Illinois) visits West High on Monday, Jan. 15, at 5 p.m.
