Iowa wrestlers ranked No. 1 in preseason poll

Could this be the year the Hawkeyes break out with an NCAA championship?
It’s been four years since Iowa stood on top of the college wrestling world.
Brent Metcalf (149) and Jay Borschel (174) plus redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (125) each won titles that year.
The Hawks have nine wrestlers ranked in the top 10 according to Intermat.
It starts at 125 with Thomas Gilman ranked fourth.
Thomas was 16-3 last year but gave way to Cory Clark, who moved up to 133.
Thomas is more of a technical wrestler while Cory reminds me of Tony Ramos, who won the title last year at 133.
Cory was 22-4 last year and finished fifth in the nation at 125.
Josh Dziewa is ranked seventh at 141. He was 27-10 and placed fifth in the Big Ten Championships.
Brody Grothus is ranked eighth at 149. Brody was 24-12 last year and went to the NCAA tournament.
Nick Moore is ranked seventh at 165. The former West High Trojan was 23-5 and placed second in the Big Ten Tournament.
Mike Evans is ranked fourth at 174. Mike placed sixth in the NCAA Tournament and was 28-7.
Sammy Brooks is ranked 10th at 184. The sophomore from Illinois was 18-7 last year.
Nathan Burak is ranked fifth at 197. He was 19-8 overall and finished eighth in the NCAA championships.
Bobby Telford placed fourth in the NCAA tournament. He was 26-7 last year and was 12-6 against ranked opponents.
If Iowa can find someone like Mike Kelly to compete at 157, the Hawks should be solid.
Tom Brands, Iowa’s head coach, always pushes his wrestlers to wrestle higher than they are seeded.
If that happens, Iowa will be back where it belongs... NCAA champs.
