Jean L. Smith, 71, of Ely, died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A celebration of Jean’s life was held June 10 at Brosh Chapel and the Avacentre in Cedar Rapids.
Jean was born Dec. 10, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Elmer and Margaret (Roit) Smith. Jean was valedictorian from the first graduating class of Prairie High School in 1959. She earned a degree from Cedar Rapids Business College. Jean worked for 30 years at Merchants National Bank until her retirement. Jean was the heart and soul of Bures Electric and Heating until her death.
Jean was a farm girl all her life and lived on the fourth generation family farm. The last 12 years were devoted to kolaches, beef and honey at local farmers markets.
Jean is survived by her husband, Ray Bures. Jean is also survived by her extended family and friends she met throughout her life.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Margaret.
