Johnson County Supervisor Meyers leaves a legacy of service

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Supervisor Larry Meyers, 58, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a two-year battle against cancer.
Meyers, a native of Dyersville, lived in the Iowa City and rural Solon area for more than 25 years. After studying architecture and urban planning, he started his own contracting business, Meyers Contracting, Inc., specializing in Victorian-era restorations. Meyers was a widower and is survived by his son, Jordan, 24.
When Meyers ran for supervisor in 2006, he became the public voice for a group of his neighbors living along Newport Road, in rural Johnson County, who resisted a proposed North Corridor road reconstruction. Tensions between the Newport neighbors and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors had been cultivated over approximately eight years. However, Meyers’ election to the board, and his subsequent vote against the road reconstruction, helped remove the controversial project from the county’s long-term road plan.
While Meyers did champion the Newport Road cause, he said in an interview just prior to the 2006 election that criticisms over his being a single-issue candidate did not concern him.
“Maybe I am a one-issue candidate,\ Meyers had said
