Lady Spartans begin postseason May 31
SOLON– With the regular season behind them and regionals beginning next week, the Solon Spartans girls’ soccer team has proven they are up for the challenge and ready to finish a winning season.
A May 17 win 1-0 against Vinton-Shellsburg only solidified their determination. The Lady Spartans finished their season against No. 4 Iowa City Regina Tuesday, May 21, with a 3-2 loss on penalty kicks.
The last three weeks have tested the team’s endurance.
“Playing six games in only 10 days, including playing the No. 1 team in the state really put the team to the test. But they reacted very well and I thought did an outstanding job working together and playing through injuries and fatigue coming away with five wins and an exceptional game against Davenport Assumption,” commended coach John Tucker. “In the second half of our season we are really working hard at fine-tuning our play and preparing for postseason play.”
That fine tuning paid off for the Spartans as they celebrated being 2013 WaMaC East champions. The Lady Spartans’ season victories earned them a bye in the first round. They are scheduled to play the winner of the first round between Anamosa and Benton Community on Friday, May 31, at 6 p.m. in Solon.
