Leo R. Zeithamel, 84, of Solon, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at the Solon Care Center. Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with the Rev. Dr. Barrie Tritle officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Leo was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Iowa City, the son of Fred and Laura (Dean) Zeithamel. Leo was a graduate of City High School and attended the University of Iowa where he played football for the Hawkeyes. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1953 until 1985. On June 5, 1953, Leo married Donna Aubrecht in Iowa City. Leo and Donna owned Zeithamel Photography. He was a well-known photographer and received numerous honors for the photography he exhibited. Leo had been a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier for 35 years. Leo was a member of First United Methodist Church, National Assn. of Letter Carriers, Professional Photographers of America, Southeast Iowa Professional Photographers and past president and lifetime member of Professional Photographers of Iowa. He was director of faculty at the Mid-America Institute of Professional Photography. Leo was a gifted handyman with the ability to fix anything. Donna was the love of his life and she had trained him well.
Leo is survived by his two children, Marci (Phil) Michel of Solon and Norman (Sheila) Zeithamel of Coralville; three grandchildren C.J. and Hailee Michel, Jaime Zeithamel; sisters-in-laws, Beverly (Rashid) Al-Rashid, Marlene Boerjan and Betty Aubrecht; numerous nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Donna in 2011, his siblings Robert Zeithamel and Josephine Anciaux, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
