Leon Frank “Mac” McNeil, 76, of Ainsworth, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at the M.L. McCreedy Home after a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services were held Jan. 11 at the Ainsworth Community Church with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. Interment will be at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth at a later date. Leon F. McNeil was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Burlington, the son of Frank and Neva (Smith) McNeil. He graduated from New London Community Schools in New London in 1954. Leon received his bachelor’s degree in education from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1958, and later earned his master’s degree in education administration from Northeastern Missouri State University. Leon was united in marriage to Linda Redfern on Sept. 27, 1964, in New London.
Leon was a teacher at Highland Community School from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. He coached football, track, and basketball for the Highland Huskies and served as the athletic director. Leon previously taught at Tri-County Schools in What Cheer.
Leon was a member of the Ainsworth Community Church.
Leon is survived by his wife, Linda McNeil of Ainsworth; son Lance (Robin) McNeil of North Liberty; daughter Lynnette (Rick) Ammar of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter Leanne (Kelby) Bender of Kalona; six grandchildren; brother Blaine (Virginia) McNeil of New London; and niece Brenda (ShaBazz) Williams of Burlington, Iowa.
