Liberty High picks up first XC team win at Mediapolis

Lightning’s Woodward and Mac earn first individual wins

WAPELLO– Liberty High’s varsity cross country teams reached new milestones Thursday, Oct. 12, as the boys earned their first meet win, the girls nearly took the runner-up spot and a pair of Bolts recorded their first victories in the Mediapolis Cross Country Spectacular held at the Indian Hills Country Club in Wapello.
The boys won the nine-team field with 39 points while the girls tied with Mediapolis with 63 for second place. However, Mediapolis won the tiebreaker, putting the Bolts in third. Peter Woodward won the boys’ race in 16:47 with Jack Kinzer and Caleb Schillinger finishing in the top 10 in fourth and ninth place, respectively. Camille Mac won the girls race in 19:39 with McKenzie Logan one second behind her for second place.
The Bolts will compete in a Class 3A state qualifying meet Thursday, Oct. 19, in Solon.

Bolts and Knights run in Jim Hetrick Invitational

DEWITT– The Liberty High Lightning and North Central Junior High Knights ran Thursday, Oct. 5, in Central DeWitt’s Jim Hetrick Invitational cross country meet at Grace Camp, in DeWitt.
Bettendorf won the varsity boys race with 95 points, while The Lightning placed 11th, led by Peter Woodward with an eighth-place, 17:16 finish. Muscatine took the junior varsity (JV) boys team title with 67 points and Liberty was 12th with 339. Dylan Schmidt led the Lightning with a 76th-place finish time of 21:44.
Liberty ran small squads in the varsity and JV girls’ races. Camille Mac posted a fourth-place finish in the varsity race with a 20:31, while Tessa Miller led the JV squad with her 73rd-place finishing time of 27:15.
North Scott won the varsity event with 55 points and Bettendorf took the JV race with 60 points.
North Scott won both middle school races with the boys scoring 44 points and the girls scoring 28 points. North Central’s Ashlyn Keeney won the girls race with a time of 11:49, while Ethan Keeney set the pace for the boys with a fifth-place finish in 11:46.
The Bolts compete Thursday, Oct. 12, in Mediapolis’ invitational and run in the boys district and girls regional competitions on Thursday, Oct. 19, at a site yet to be determined for a shot to participate in the state cross country meet.

Bolts and Knights run in Jim Hetrick Invitational

IOWA CITY– Liberty High’s cross country teams ran Thursday, Sept. 28, in City High’s Bud Williams Invitational at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course.
Pleasant Valley won the varsity boys race with 15 points, followed by City High (49), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (106), Pekin (124), Durant (151) and Liberty (162). Peter Woodward led the Bolts with a tenth-place finish in 17:28.1.
City High won the junior varsity (JV) boys race with 20 points, followed by Pleasant Valley (43), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (85) and the Bolts (125). Ben Nielsen led Liberty High with a 93rd-place finish in 21:56.0.
Liberty ran an incomplete team in the JV girls race, won by City High with 15 points. Avery Clark, Samantha Schildroth and Tessa Miller finished 29th, 56th and 57th respectively in 25:23.8, 28:22.1 and 28:29.4.
Camille Mac and McKenzie Logan ran varsity for Liberty and finished sixth and seventh respectively in 20:39.6 and 20:45.0. City High won the race with 29 points.
Future Bolts from North Central and Northwest Jr. High also ran with Northwest winning the boys race with 24 points, followed by Southeast Jr. High (42) and North Central (63.) Miguel Cohen Suarez from Northwest won the race in 10:52.4, while Ethan Keeney led North Central with a fifth-place finish in 11:35.7.
Southeast Jr. High won the girls race with 42 points, followed by North Central (46) and Northwest (62). Ashlyn Keeney of North Central won the race in 11:37.3.
