Mount Vernon takes WaMaC match 3-0

MOUNT VERNON– It was a battle of WaMaC foes Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Mustangs’ stable as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers sailed into town. The Mustangs, second-ranked in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union earlier in the day, swept the eighth-ranked (in Class 4A) Clippers, 3-0.
The Clippers fell into a hole early in the first game, and never recovered, losing 25-11. CCA took a very brief lead in the second set as a Hanna Stokes kill made it 11-10 in favor of the Clippers. However that was as close as they would get, dropping the game 25-20. In the third set, the Mustangs galloped to a 10-4 lead, which prompted Coach Jackie Clubb to call a time-out. The Clippers regrouped and rallied back to a one-point deficit at 17-16. The Mustangs called a time-out, and the rest of the match was theirs with the 25-18 win.
Natalie Brimeyer led the Clippers with nine kills and three solo blocks. Alyssa Weldon had eight kills, Hanna Stokes made six and Ashley Prusha, Dacia Lipkea and Corrine Schwarting had three each. Megan Beckler added one kill as well, with a dozen assists on the night. Weldon made 17 assists and was 11-11 in serves.
Lauren Stopko made 15 digs, McKenna McCreedy had seven and Sheyanne Koethe made three.
The Clippers are in their homeport Tuesday, Sept. 23, as the Marion Indians come to town for a sophomore, junior varsity and varsity series starting at 6 p.m.
