NLFD battles blaze in rural subdivision

IOWA CITY– A home in rural Iowa City southeast of North Liberty was destroyed by fire last week.
The North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department (NLFD) was dispatched to 6 Woodland Hts. NE, Iowa City, for a structure fire in the early morning hours Tuesday, Dec. 16.
According to a report issued by the NLFD, first-arriving North Liberty units reported flames and thick smoke showing throughout the structure. Mutual aid from surrounding fire departments was quickly summoned.
The home was occupied at the time of the fire by two occupants who were able to safely evacuate the structure, according to the report. Smoke detectors on the main floor of the home were working.
The resident of the home reported a loud sound just prior to smelling smoke and called 911, the report noted. North Liberty fire units were on scene for approximately eight hours to completely extinguish the fire. 
The home was a total loss and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no reported civilian injuries, or firefighter injuries.
North Liberty units responding to the scene were Engine 112, Quint 114, Engine Tanker 113, Rescue 119 and command vehicle 115. The North Liberty Fire Department was assisted by the Coralville Fire Department, Hills Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, Solon Fire Department, Swisher Fire Department, Tiffin Fire Department, Riverside Fire Department, West Branch Fire Department, Johnson County Sheriffs Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Joint Communication Center, the City of North Liberty Streets Department and MidAmerica Energy.
