O’Connor and Withrow power Creek Boys to first win of the season

CCA soars past West Delaware, 85-62
CCA senior Nick O’Connor puts in two of his 25 points Tuesday, Dec. 10, at home, against West Delaware. The Clippers picked up their first win of the season after downing the Hawks, 85-62.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team picked up its first win in the early part of the season Tuesday, Dec. 10, at home, against the West Delaware Hawks. The Clippers shelled the birds, 85-62, as nine Creek Boys put up points, with senior Nick O’Connor and junior Christian Withrow leading the way with 25 apiece.
The Clippers took an early 4-0 lead with field goals from T.J. Bollers and O’Connor, stretched it to 6-2 thanks to Mike Potter’s two-point goal, and never trailed on their way to a 25-17 lead at the end of the first period, and a 36-31 halftime advantage. O’Connor and Tyler Schrepfer boosted the first half numbers with a pair of three-pointers each. O’Connor sank his third three-pointer in the third quarter on his way to five total. O’Connor and Withrow poured in the lion’s share of the points in the third with a two-point basket from Schrepfer and a three-pointer from junior Brock Reade adding to the 61-46 lead going into the final eight minutes.
With the win all but ensured, Head Coach Brandon Clubb rotated up and down his bench, including sophomore Ben Swails who put in two points for a 78-59 lead, and sophomore Kyle Schrepfer who had a five-point effort with a two-point basket, followed by a three-pointer, to make it 83-59. Tanner Webb, Bryce Skow, Riley Wolfe, Mason Stanfield and Mason Slaymaker also saw floor time in the final minutes.
The win improved the Clippers’ record to 1-2 ahead of a pair of games against 3-0 Grinnell and Marion.
The Creek Boys travel to Center Point to face the Stormin’ Pointers on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7:30 p.m., closing out 2019. 2020 opens with CCA at home on Friday, Jan. 3, as WaMaC West rival Williamsburg visits for a girl-boy doubleheader. The evening of basketball starts at 3 p.m. with the freshman-sophomore girls game, followed at 4:30 p.m. by the junior varsity girls and freshmen boys. The varsity girls take the floor in the main gym at 6 p.m., while the sophomore boys tip-off in the auxiliary gym. The varsity boys light up the court at 7:30 p.m.
