Operation ReLeaf to be held Sept. 22

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Parks Department is hosting Alliant Energy’s Operation ReLeaf Residential Tree Distribution in North Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9-11 a.m. at the North Liberty Community Center. This program is a partnership between Alliant Energy, Iowa Department of Natural Resources Forestry Bureau, and the City of North Liberty.
The goal of Operation ReLeaf is to reduce energy consumption through proper tree placement around residential or commercial buildings. There will also be a tree planting and care workshop at the event.
Trees are available to all Alliant Energy customers for $25, approximately a third of the value of the tree. There will be free mulch available to anyone who purchases a tree.
Trees are going fast, so please fill out the preorder form on the city’s website at www.northlibertyiowa.org, and send along with your check to the City of North Liberty.
There is a strong field of research that shows many benefits that increasing your urban tree canopy can offer to your community:
• The presence of larger trees in yards and as street trees can add from three to 15 percent to home values throughout neighborhoods.
• In one study of community policing innovations, there was a 20 percent overall decrease in calls to police from the parts of town that received location-specific treatments. Cleaning up vacant lots was one of the most effective treatment strategies.
• In a recent study in Baltimore, a 10 percent increase in trees roughly equaled a 12 percent decrease in crime.
• Urban forest can reduce annual storm water runoff by two to seven percent, and a mature tree can store 50 to 100 gallons of water during large storms.
• One study found the presence of trees in a suburban landscape significantly reduced the cruising speed of drivers by an average of three miles per hour.
•  Older adults who have more exposure to green common spaces report a stronger sense of unity among residents within their neighborhoods, and experience a stronger sense of belonging to the neighborhood.
• The experience of nature helps to restore the mind from the mental fatigue of work or studies, improving productivity and creativity.
• Residents of areas with the highest levels of greenery were three times as likely to be physically active and 40 percent less likely to be overweight or obese than residents living in the least green settings.
