Poppy Days in Solon, May 19-28

SOLON– Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars.
The tradition of the memorial flower honoring the war dead began after WWI when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian Colonel John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row...”
The poppies made by hospitalized and disabled veterans will be available in various businesses around town. Several auxiliary and junior auxiliary members will go house to house in various neighborhoods to distribute poppies. All donations are used in programs to help veterans and their families. The generosity is greatly appreciated.
