Solon football schedule released for fall 2020

2020 football schedule offers something to ponder other than the pandemic

DES MOINES– With the predicament weighing heavy due to the spread of COVID-19, the Iowa State High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released the fall season football schedules to offer the public something to take their minds off the threat and provide something to look forward to.
The Solon Spartans, as was announced previously with the addition of the North Liberty Lightning to Class 3A, returned to Class 2A, assigned to District 6. The ISHSAA announced practices can begin on Monday, Aug. 10, with the season kicking off on Friday, Aug. 28, and Week 9, the final week of the regular season, takes place on Friday, Oct. 23, barring any delays or postponements. Class 2A has 54 teams total and there will still be 16 playoff qualifiers with only one automatic qualifier per district and at-large berths determined by RPI. Unlike previous years, which ran on two-year cycles with rotating home and away stands, this season’s schedule is only for the 2020 season.
The schedule was released on the heels of Spartans’ veteran head coach Kevin Miller stepping down after 19 seasons, 197 wins and four state championships. The Spartans’ 2019 campaign ended at the UNI-Dome, in Cedar Falls, in the state championship game with a 37-17 loss to Western Dubuque, ending the season at 12-1, 5-0 in Class 3A District 6.
The 2020 Spartans’ IHSAA Class 2A District 6 Football Schedule, with opponents’ 2019 season records, is:
Aug. 28– Solon hosts Williamsburg High School (8-4)
Sept. 4– Solon hosts Washington High School (7-3)
Sept. 11– Solon visits Marion High School (0-9)
Sept. 18– Solon hosts State Center’s West Marshall High School (6-4)
Sept. 25– Solon visits Laporte City’s Union High School (2-7)
Oct. 2– Solon visits Tama’s South Tama County High School (0-9)
Oct. 9– Solon hosts Vinton-Shellsburg High School (3-6)
Oct. 16– Solon hosts Mount Vernon High School (4-5)
Oct. 23– Solon visits Center Point Urbana High School (4-5)
A lot of questions need to be answered in the months leading to the new season, something to take everyone’s mind off the pandemic threatening the country.
Not the least of which is who will direct the 2020 campaign?
