Solon Public Library

Thank you

The budget process is completed for the year and the library would like to extend a thank you to both the Johnson County Board of Supervisors and the Solon City Council for their annual contributions to our library. The city and the county each provide approximately half of our annual budget (based on the circulation of our patrons and where they live) and we are very fortunate to have their financial support.

Thanks to the Friends of the Library for another successful book sale

Projects like the books sales, the book cart, holiday sales and the city-wide garage sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, have been a wonderful rallying point to pull in community support for the library and the services we provide. Library staff and patrons appreciate your hard work.

Problem noted

Several patrons notified us that they were not receiving their weekly email reminders. These weekly emails are a quick look at what you have checked out from the library and your due dates. We have contacted the software company and hopefully a solution will be found soon. The company has contacted us and they will be using our library, along with others, to do some testing. You may receive your weekly email, generated on an atypical day but the problem hasn’t been fixed yet. You can still check your due dates by signing in to each library account or call the library 319-624-2678 and we would be happy to check and/or renew your items.

Library sponsors book clubs

Did you know that the library sponsors a book club at the Solon Nursing Care Center? This ambitious group has been meeting for three years, now, and they are reading and discussing two book titles a month.
The Solon Area Book Club meets at the library, on the third Tuesday of each month, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. They extend an open invitation to anyone who would like to read the title selected each month (please check at the circulation desk to reserve a copy) and to share in their book discussion. The title chosen for the month will be featured on our website and on the library bulletin board in the front lobby. The title for this month is “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn and in March the group will read “Mountains beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder (note paragraph below).

Thinking critically

Mark your calendars for an annual reading event that is sponsored by the Solon High School physiology and anatomy classes along with the Solon Public Library.
This program called “Thinking Critically About Issues in Science: Solon HS and the Community Reading Together” is scheduled for April 3, from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in the high school media center. The book selected this year is “Mountains beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder. This book is a biography about Paul Farmer, who decided, while attending medical school, to bring his knowledge and modern medicine to those who need it the most.
The Solon library will distribute copies of the book to be discussed to our book club and to any member of the community that would like to join the discussion. The students prepare discussion questions and facilitate. Those who have attended in the past have been impressed with the scope of the discussion and enjoyed sharing experiences and different viewpoints.

Support the Library Foundation

Raffle tickets will be available through the month of February for this first fundraiser sponsored by the Library Foundation. The purchase of a $5 ticket may give you the chance to win a vacation or entertainment package that you can use over spring break or through the summer. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to support computer classes for adults. The mission of the foundation is to support life-long learning and to insure the future and viability of library service in the Solon community. For additional information about the raffle, check the library website.
