Spartan Outdoor Events Center fundraising event June 9
SOLON– The committee raising funds for the Solon Outdoor Events Center will kick-off a renewed effort Thursday, June 9, at Jo’s Roadhouse at 7 p.m. A short fundraising program presentation for the public will take place at 7:30 p.m. Giveaways and a silent auction of one item (a complete Solon Spartan football uniform with helmet, jersey and pants) will also be held. Former Solon and current Iowa football standout James Morris will speak, along with Solon Superintendent Sam Miller. Miller and project fundraiser Steve Duncan will speak about the importance of the project.
Fundraising strategies being utilized:
• Cash gifts through the fundraising brochure which was mailed out at the end of May;
• Personal solicitation visits/presentations with individuals and businesses;
• Solicitation of “gifts in kind” from the community (time/labor/materials & construction expertise);
• A Grain Gifting program for the Solon agricultural community to become involved in the success of the project;
• Gifts of appreciated assets.
All tax-deductible donations are being held by the Solon Education Foundation in an account set aside for only the Spartan Outdoor Events Center. Expenditures from these funds can only be made under the direction of the Solon Board of Education and Superintendent Sam Miller.
Currently, the committee anticipates having the facility ready for football games by the fall of 2012.
The district has already completed the first phase of the recently-redesigned project, which included the construction of a competitive track, visitors’ bleachers and field lighting. A new scoreboard will be funded through
advertising dollars and a new sound system was funded by the Solon Area Community Foundation and the Solon Athletic Boosters.
The second phase, estimated to cost $751,000, would include home bleacher seating for 1,500, field drainage, sod, home and visitor sidewalks, an interior fence around the track and press box.
Phase three would add sidewalks to northwest entrance, west entry ticket booth and paving, flagpoles and amenities, the east entry (concessions, restrooms, team locker rooms, officials’ room, utility rooms) at an estimated cost of $1.9 million.
A fourth phase would add an additional 1,500 home seats, parking lot and landscaping ($565,000), while the final fifth phase would provide synthetic turf ($1.1 million).
