Spartans to dedicate stadium Friday night

SOLON– The team rooms are done, the dedication ceremony is set, and the pillars and plaques are in place. Spartan Stadium will be officially open for business this Friday as the Spartan football team faces the Mount Pleasant Panthers.
Former Spartan coach Ed Hansen will return to recognize his namesake press box in a ceremony that will also thank a couple dozen of the most important stadium stakeholders, organizers, and donors, including a $400,000 donation from the Gerdin family of North Liberty.
Superintendent Sam Miller said the first game of the season, a 21-11 win versus Mount Vernon on Aug. 24, had what appeared to be an overflow crowd, but ticket sales showed the seats just weren’t being filled.
This time, the host school will be ready with a team of ushers to help seat mobility-impaired fans in dedicated areas and find seats in the rest of the stands for other fans.
At the last home game, 50-75 people stood outside the bleachers for the duration of the game, on both ends starting at about the 20-yard line. Miller said seats in the middle of the Spartan bleachers were underutilized and this time fans will be helped to find them until all seats are filled.
