IOWA CITY — Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans baseball team slipped to 12-8 overall Friday evening after splitting a varsity double-header with Cedar Rapids Xavier at home.
West took the opener 10-1 but fell 5-2 in the nightcap.
In the opener, West started out with a three-run lead after the first inning. Ryan Rumpf drove in Aaron Peller with an RBI double that went all the way to the right field fence. Spence Bonner singled bringing home Ryan Siems before Jeremy Cronk walked to load up the bases. Luke Crimmins’ pop-up to right field was caught, but Rumpf was able to score.
The Saints got their run in the top of the second, but West put up three more in the bottom of the inning as Leo Franz and Peller both singled. A Siems single brought Franz home, followed shortly by a two-RBI double by Bonner.
The Saints were shut down offensively the rest of the game, and the Trojans put up runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Siems batted-in Franz in the third, Nate Ewing posted an RBI single in the fourth, and Corey Kuepker and Connor Schreck both put up RBIs in the sixth.
Cronk threw six innings striking out five, giving up six hits and one earned run. Will Ross relieved Cronk for the top of the seventh striking out one Saint.
West had ten runs, 14 hits and one error, the Saints put out six hits with one run and one error.
The Saints opened the nightcap with a run in the top of the first inning and added one run each inning through the fifth. West’s pair of runs came in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, Rumpf hit an RBI single to bring Peller home while the Trojans had a major scoring opportunity fall apart on them in the fifth. Cronk led-off for West with a long-ball single, Ewing walked and Schreck singled to load up the bases with no outs. Cronk took home plate when the catcher lost the ball during a Franz at-bat. Franz hit to an out, Peller struck-out and Siems popped up for an out to end the inning with one run and two stranded.
Crimmins, Kellen Yoder and Schreck shared the mound with 3-1/2 innings for Crimmins, 1-1/2 for Yoder, and two for Schreck. Individual pitching stats were not immediately available.
The Trojans are home again Wednesday, June 22 for a JV/Varsity pair against Muscatine.
