IOWA CITY — Jeff Kelley’s Women of Troy swept the varsity softball squad from Dubuque Senior High Thursday evening in a varsity doubleheader at home in cool, windy and damp conditions. West took the opener 8-4 and won the nightcap 10-0 in five innings to improve their overall standings to 18-6 overall, 12-5 in the MVC.
In the opener, West put up eight runs on nine hits with one error to the Rams’ four runs with six hits and an error. West scored in the bottom of the first, three more in the third, and four in the fourth. Dubuque scored twice in the top of the third and put up two more in the top of the fifth.
Shelly Stumpff made her life in the circle a little easier, putting up an RBI single scoring courtesy runner Morgan Ryan in the first inning. In the third, Mikaela Morgan singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Larson. Brianna Sturtz singled and made it to second on a loose ball. Alise Miller then smacked a single bringing in Morgan and Sturtz. Michaela Recker singled and an overthrown ball allowed Miller to come home for a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth Danielle Chelf went to first base after being hit by a pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Laynie Whitehead. Larson got a base hit, bringing home Chelf and was replaced on base by courtesy runner Ryan. Sturtz and Miller were walked, loading up the bases and setting the table for Stumpff. With no outs, Stumpff blasted a 3-RBI double for an 8-2 lead.
Mackenzie Laux worked the circle in the nightcap, hoping to build on her record of one perfect game and two no-hitters so far this season. While Laux and the Women of Troy held the Rams scoreless in a Mercy Rule-shortened game, the senior-less Senior team managed to get three hits off of her.
Larson led off for West in the nightcap, walking to first. Sturtz was going to advance her with a sacrifice bunt, but a Ram error put Sturtz safely on base. Miller stepped up to the plate and cranked out a 3-run homer to the delight of Trojan Nation.
In the second, Whitehead walked and had Caroline Found come on as courtesy runner. Found made second on a wild pitch and came home on a Sturtz RBI double. Miller walked and Stumpff singled to load up the bases again with two outs on the board. Recker fired a line drive to center field, bringing in two more runs for a 6-0 lead.
Chelf led off for West in the third inning and was walked. Grace Tafolla came in as Chelf’s courtesy runner. Tafolla advanced to third on two bases worth of errors by the Rams before coming home on a single off the bat of Morgan. Sturtz brought Morgan in on a single for an 8-0 lead.
The fifth and final inning started with Morgan getting a base hit and moving to second on a bunt by Larson. A dropped ball put Larson safely at first. Miller was intentionally walked, loading up the bases for Stumpff who put up a sacrifice fly ball to bring in Morgan. Recker came to the plate with two outs and two on. A single by Recker was all that was needed to bring in Larson and the winning run.
